I currently teach Family and Community Medicine for the University of Saint La Salle College of Medicine and I handle the lecture on "History of Public Health". After discussing the milestones in public health both from a global and national perspective, I asked my first year med students if they are aware of existing Public health programs of the government. It then gave me an idea for their first project. Divided into four groups, I asked them to come up with a video that would describe an existing Public Health Program of their choice. The idea is to have a one-shot video supposedly to highlight the process a patient would go through if they were to avail of the services under a specific health program.     As per tradition, I always require my third year medical students to submit as part of their requirements in my Primary Health Care class health promotion materials. This year was no exception. Six 1-minute commercials on various health topics were submitted to along with their proposed newspaper advertisement and a technical paper about the health program they would want to implement in the community.     What was different this year was for the first time, I asked my class to organize a health summit in our adopted community in Bacolod City. The Health Summit was about increasing the awareness of the residents of a Gawad Kalinga site in Brgy. Sum-ag about Dengue. The health summit was attended by almost all of the residents, including local politicians (City Councilor Em Ang and Kalaw Puentevella). For a doctor, whether in public health or in private practice, the major enemy is disease and for centuries, physicians and scientists would always struggle to find ways and means on how to fight and eliminate diseases, especially those which are fatal to man and even animals and plants on which men depend for food. For a clinician, the objective is how one individual would not get sick or proceed to a more complicated case. For a public health officer, the objective is how to ensure that a community of many would not get sick (outbreak). This will be the topic of my first lecture for the 3rd year medical students this second semester. 2012 marks the 10th year since the first Medical School in the island of Negros opened. The University of Saint La Salle opened a medical school in June 10 of 2002 with 44 freshmen students. It had its first batch of graduates in 2006. Its first graduates took the Board exams in 2007. Currently, all those who took the board exams of 2007 are now licensed medical doctors working in various areas and places. Many are specialists. Many are also in public health. This school year, the USLS College of Medicine has grown big with around 80 medical students now enrolled as freshmen, a 100% jump from last year's freshmen enrollment. Traditionally, as started 10 years ago by the pioneer batch, the college of medicine would hold its annual Acquaintance party. During my Saturday Class with the third-year medical students, we discussed how health programs are supposed to be implemented. It was emphasized that planning is important before implementing a program. Part of planning of course is to do a situational analysis and community diagnosis. The output of the class after the lecture was to design a social marketing strategy for 4 different D.O.H. programs: National Tuberculosis Program, Anti-Dengue Drive, Maternal Health and Expanded Program Immunization. The class has to design a campaign strategy that would involve tangibles such as posters, brochures, a 2-min. TV commercial and a Module designed for health workers on how to teach the campaign. Among the three outputs, designing a module or workshop can be quite difficult, especially for medical students who were not taught how to be "teachers" or to educate. I found myself in yet another familiar territory this morning when I came back to the University of Saint La Salle in the College of Medicine to give my lecture on Public Health (First year students) and Implementing Health Programs (Third Year students). While the topics were all about the history of public health and how to implement health programs, I could not help but also highlight the inequities in health. Discussing the health inequities can be lengthy and for non-health professionals it can even be confusing. So here are I feel three videos that I would like to share that would highlight, first and foremost, the local health system, then the social determinants and finally what we can do to address inequities in health. There are some things a frosh student in medical school must know. 1. Starting now, you will carry more books in your life than any other. You might want to start investing on ebooks and e-readers if you want to spare your back and arms. 2. Your new friends will be Gray, Robbins, Guyton, Schwartz, Nelson and Harper. You will refer to them as if they are your best friends. You don't know them personally but you will be spending your time more with them than even yourself. 3. Your class can be crowded considering the number of enrolled students for the first year. Don't worry, half of that will be gone by next year, if not next semester. 4. As part of the requirements of my first year medical students for their Family Medicine course, I asked them to produce mini-films that would highlight the trajectory of illness. Each group was given a unique case and their tasked was to portray the various stages and phases a sick individual and his/her family would undergo. The value of knowing the trajectory of illness is that the family physician can be aware of the emotional and physical stresses of his/her patients and their families and that the family physician can plan out a regimen that is sensitive to the emotional, mental, social and physical needs of his/her patients. I have just attended the general assembly and annual convention of the Philippine Academic Society of Community Medicine in Manila yesterday, a move which actually hoped to revive the long-hibernated academic society of professors teaching community medicine.With its theme: Community Medicine - Past, Present and Future Directions, the half-day convention highlighted updates on the status of Community medicine education in the country and highlighted best practices of other med schools with regards to faculty development. I am thankful that my University, the University of Saint La Salle, tapped me to represent the school, being the lone delegate from Negros. A few years back, many wanted to take up a nursing degree and become nurses and perhaps work abroad. But now, there are many nursing graduates and even licensed nurses taking up medicine and aspiring to become doctors. Medical school can be expensive. The tuition alone is very expensive. There are various schools and universities that offer some form of partial or full scholarships. On June 10, 2012, the University of Saint La Salle will be celebrating its 10th year anniversary since the opening of the first College of Medicine in Bacolod City and in the entire Negros Island. This almost impossible dream became a reality because of the pioneer students and teachers who said yes with faith. At present, the pioneer Class are now serving the community as physicians, both in the private field and in public health. I am proud to be 1 of 4 Doctors to the Barrios from USLS who as of this moment were the only USLS medical graduates who joined the DTTB program of the Department of Health. The rest are now finishing their residency training in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB-GYNE, Neurosurgery, Pathology, ENT and Anesthesiology.
