I couldn't help it. I just had to buy an internet card even though the price is robbery in daylight. I just had to blog my insights for today. Plus, I needed to post a shout-out to my wife and kids back home. I do miss them. Anyway, today is Day 2 of the Health Leaders and Managers for the Poor training in Tagaytay. The entire day was really insightful. The morning started with a lecture on health inequities by Professor Garilao (former DAR secretary). It was an interesting lecture. I was able to participate during the discussion, giving my example of what I feel is an "inequity" in my health system. The example I gave was with regards to facility-based deliveries. The existing policy is to encourage mothers to have their babies delivered in a health facility, attended by skilled health workers. The objective is to reduce maternal mortality rate. It is going to be half-relaxation half-work. I will be attending the last module of my Health Leadership and Management Program training conducted and sponsored by Zuellig Foundation. The training will be spent in Phinma Training Center in Tagaytay. This will be my second time in Tagaytay. I have learned a lot from my Module 1: Actualizing Potentials which was held in Bohol last year. I heard we will be the last batch of HLMP trainees. I will be travelling to Manila early tomorrow morning and my dilemma now is where to spend my remaining 6-7 hours before I travel to Makati where the assembly point will be (Philamlife Tower Lobby). My flight will be arriving at around 8 a.m. and since SM MOA won't be open until 10 am I am trying to find a place where I can wait for the next two hours before I transfer to MOA where I can have my lunch before I head to Makati. What I love about attending CME's of the Doctors to the Barrios is the opportunity to listen to stories about the adventures of these doctors. From the mountainous terrain to the most isolated island in the middle of the Philippine Sea, these brave doctors persevere in their commitment to provide quality health care service. I have always said it before, these rural health physicians along with so many rural health workers are the true modern-day heroes of the Philippines. They could have made a choice and leave the country for better opportunities. Instead, they stayed and made so much difference in the lives of so many. Through the efforts of these doctors, poor municipalities were able to gain a new rural health unit, new set of supplies, new projects that were able to provide some form of sustainability and quite frankly, a new sense of hope. Snapshots of Batch 23 of the Doctors to the Barrios during our CME here in Hotel Kimberly in Tagaytay: It is quite a stormy day here in Tagaytay. According to reports, a tropical storm is hitting Luzon as of the moment, thus, it is raining hard outside of the hotel. Occasionally, a thick layer of fog would creep over the hotel area. It is chilly here in the highlands but the 4th day of CME is way better than the previous days. The workshop conducted to us was so far the most productive and interactive part of this 34th CME. It is now the third day of the 34th CME of the Doctors to the Barrios and the CME is being held here in Hotel Kimberly, Tagaytay. Perhaps it is a perfect getaway for these tired DTTB's, many of whom have been deployed in the most merciless areas of the country. So, last Monday, I woke up early and headed to the airport where I took the first flight out to Manila. In the same flight was Doctor Jesena, a pediatrician and former professor in the College of Medicine. We talked about a lot of stuff and somehow, my conversation with the good doctor has also helped me think of my plans after DTTB. My stint as a DTTB will end after 6 months, which means, I will be unemployed by the end of October. I arrived in Manila at around 8 a.m. and headed immediately to the Central Office in Tayuman, where the rest of the DTTB's were waiting with the bus which would bring us to Tagaytay.
