How To Do The Harlem Shake

Image
Step aside Psy. There is a new dance step in town that's going viral. And you don't even have to memorize the steps. It is so easy, Gangnam Style looks like doing Calculus. It's the Harlem Shake. If you haven't seen a Harlem Shake video yet, take a look at this: The Harlem Shake began just recently and was started by 5 teenagers from Queensland, Australia. The videos last 31 seconds and feature an excerpt from the song "Harlem Shake" by electronic musician Baauer. Since then, many uploaded their own versions of Harlem Shake. You can also do your own Harlem Shake. The Harlem Shake video usually begins with a person wearing a helmet or mask dancing to the song alone for 15 seconds, surrounded by other people not paying attention or unaware of the dancing individual. The second half of the video then cuts to the entire crowd doing crazy stuff, making their own convulsive dance steps for the next 15 seconds. Usually they would be wearing funny cost...

Gangnam Style In Different Styles

Image
Korean Pop star Psy's Gangnam Style is a worldwide hit, even to non-Asians. Around the world, people would do the Gangnam style dance and even do their own versions of the dance (and the song) and upload them on youtube. It was an instant hit, especially here in the Philippines. It's almost like the MC Hammer's "You can't touch this" dance step of today's generation. Scouring the youtube world with videos of Gangnam dance covers, here are some of my favorites: Like it? Share it. Get the Share on Facebook widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox ! Dancing "Pinoy Ako" Around Europe

Image
During our Global Health Course in Finland 2 years ago, we four Filipino Doctors enjoyed our experience so much that as our way of saying thank you to our hosts and co-delegates, we decided to come up with a video of the four of us dancing the anthem of every Filipino fan, "Pinoy Ako" We danced in Estonia, Sweden, Finland and even invited some of our friends to make a special appearance. Disclaimer: we are not professional dancers as the video itself will prove. Like it? Share it. Get the Share on Facebook widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox ! Not seeing a widget? More Slogans For The Philippines

Image
A few minutes ago I read a link from tweeter that the new slogan of the Philippine Department of Tourism which is, "It's More Fun In the Philippines" is not the first. In 1951, Switzerland had the same slogan. Perhaps it was just a pure coincidence that our present-day thinkers in the Tourism department decided to use a tag-line utilized by a country ages ago. Or maybe they have been running out of tag-lines to use that reviving old tag lines would be the best and easy option. Still, the present slogan is far better than the "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" slogan. Surfing the web, I was able to come across a website called SloganMaker which helps you create a slogan out of a word or phrase. Simply type the word e.g. The Philippines, click the "Make A Slogan" button and a slogan will be suggested to you. You can re-click if you don't like the suggested slogan to re-create a new one. So, I typed the name "The Philippines" and here are some of t...

Comedy In The Air: Cebu Pacific's New Gimmick

Image
Cebu Pacific Airlines started a new gimmick a few years ago when they had their flight attendants dance to Lady Gaga while demonstrating the "safety features of the aircraft". That really caught the attention of many. But flash mobs are now the thing of the past. It is already 2012. So, new things have been in store from Cebu Pacific, including this Improv Comedy care of SPIT. Like it? Share it. Get the Share on Facebook widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox ! From Jailbirds To Stars

Image
Remember the dancing prisoners from Cebu? They really caught the cyber-world on fire, with their youtube videos earning 45 million viewers worldwide. It was really a delightful phenomenon, to see hard-ass "breakers of the law" dancing to the steps of Michael Jackson. They literally became a tourist attraction. And now, they have even inspired the production of a musical which will be aired in the world wide web. Entitled Prison Dancer, the musical promises to air 12 episodes and 12 original songs. It hopes to be a hit with the netizens just like its inspiration. I would expect it to be funny and entertaining but also at the same time thought-provoking. Here's the trailer of the upcoming musical show. Like it? Share it. Get the Share on Facebook widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox ! Not seeing a widget? ( More info )Like it.

In Times Like This, We Need Madea

Image
It seems nobody's giving good advice to our government leaders lately. The many foul ups they have been committing are directly and indirectly affecting the entire country. Well, if I were president and if I was given the chance to choose an adviser, I would choose this old lady who calls herself Madea. Madea is a tough cookie who speaks her mind and has this uncanny way of making profound things seem pragmatic. Sometimes the advice she would give would even make people uncomfortable, would shake them to their core, but once you step back and allow it to settle, you would then try to understand the meaning of her words and say, "It actually makes sense." Unfortunately, Madea is not a real person. She is just the creation of Tyler Perry who actually plays the role. The Madea series started as a stage play which gained popularity and had movie versions of her stories. One particularly favorite is Madea's Big Happy Family. The story is simple to follow but the advi...

Define "Lost": Our Ambassador To China

Image
And this is the guy we are sending to China as our official representative. Defintion of terms: Diplomacy - is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of groups or states. It usually refers to international diplomacy, the conduct of international relations. Hard power - is a theory that describes using military and economic means to influence the behavior or interests of other political bodies. It is used in contrast to soft power, which refers to power that comes from diplomacy, culture and history. I think this guy is worse than any "midnight appointee" of former president Gloria Arroyo. P.S. The three pillars of Philippine diplomacy are economic, political and people-to- people cooperation. Like it? Share it. "Hollywood" Signs a la Pinoy

Image
News about Gov. Vilma Santos putting up a huge "BATANGAS" sign at Mt. Taal reminiscent of the familiar Hollywood sign in the US triggered a lot of comments and feedback in the blogosphere. Pinoy as we are, a lot of artistic alternatives to this proposal also propped up in the net. The picture shown here is the supposed view of Mt. Taal once the "Batangas" sign would be erected. After this picture came out, more funny pictures started circulating in the web. Here are just some funny examples: I'm not sure if they can make this sign in Mt. Mayon very sustainable though, due to its frequent volcanic activity. I think it's time the Chinese must know how to read the signs. And since we are labeling our islands, let's make sure we still have 7,107 of them still accounted for. Or why not use it for commercial or advertising purposes? Remember these guys from DPWH? Just calling a spade a spade. I think this is Governor Vilma's favorite. Let...

The Cinemanatomy: Learning Anatomy the Fun Way

Part of the challenge of being a teacher is how to motivate the students to learn. Making them learn is one thing. Making the learning fun is another. So, stepping off from what I previously did during a Physiology class I handled last school year, I asked my Anatomy students to submit a video summarizing what they have learned about a specific human organ. Last school year it was the Physio-mercials, wherein the students applied Physiology concepts on a fictional product they were supposed to advertise. This time, the students in Anatomy were free to choose the kind of format they would want. They were only given a human organ to focus and some keywords they were supposed to integrate in their video. There were 5 groups and there were basically 5 different outputs: One video was actually a spoof of the popular TV series CSI, with the team investigating the victim's Liver. The other video was also a spoof of a popular local entertainment news, with Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda talkin...

Funny Infomercial Made By Physiology Students

Image
Applying some physio-concepts learned in school, these physiology students presented an infomercial selling a fictitious product and brand. (Disclaimer: any similarity to actual brand or product is purely coincidental and is not in any way promoting such brand or product) Funny and educational at the same time.
