Hollywood Films To Watch Out For

What's great with having Xbox360 is that you can get to watch the latest movie trailers from your Xbox, for as long as you have internet/wifi connection of course. Also, you would need an XBOX Live account as well which is easy to make and is free. Watching some of these movie trailers make me excited to see these movies in the big screen. I love watching movies and whether it's in the cinema or in DVD, movie-watching can be a huge experience for many. Here are just some of the movies that I am looking forward to watch later this year and next year. Victor Hugo's Les Miserables is a classic and I've been waiting for it's Broadway version to be adopted in the big screen. The other Les Miserables starred by Liam Neeson was also outstanding and still one of my favorite movies of all time. Finally, the latest Superman film will be shown in 2013. Superman: Man of Steel has definitely come a long way from the Christopher-Reeves franchise. This is also something t...

DeParis Restaurant in Boracay

Image
Looking for a nice restaurant to eat in Boracay under a tight budget can be a challenge, especially if it's the peak season. During the off-peak season however, a lot of things in Boracay can be quite cheap. However, I place called DeParis in Boracay remains affordable throughout the year. DeParis is located at the Beach Front of Boracay, right at the center of Station 2 just close to the entrance of D'Mall. It is a hotel and a restaurant which caters to tourists who are traveling on a shoestring budget. When I was in Boracay recently I was able to discover this place while looking for a place to eat. Having arrived in Boracay after island-hopping from Leyte to Caticlan, I thought that I deserve a good meal without tearing apart my wallet. DeParis looked attractive at this aspect considering that they have a 250-pesos worth of "budget meals". This "budget-meal" is composed of a vegetable soup, a main course of your choice and a dessert, all for 250 ...

Dried Fish, Dried Mangoes and More: Rediscovering Cebu City

Image
I would always visit Cebu City almost every year for the last 5 years. As always, whenever I visit this historic city, I never fail to visit the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino. This huge and historic church right in the heart of the city is the home of the famous religious relic: the image of the Child Jesus which was given by the Spaniard colonizers to the early inhabitants of Cebu. Since the day the Cebuanos received the image, they have revered it and defended it. In fact, Cebuanos are really very religious. They are not ashamed to express their devotion to the Child Jesus even in public spaces. It was perhaps serendipitous that when I visited Cebu City last week, it was during my 5th anniversary as a medical doctor. So, I went to light a candle in the Church offering a special thank you to God for having given me a fruitful 5 years as a medical doctor. The Basilica is also the home to the famous Magellan's cross. When Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu City in 1521, he co...

Habagat Nights In Boracay

Image
The Southwest Monsoon season means only one thing for Boracay: off peak. It's the time of the year when hotels and accommodation in Boracay Island are cheapest, buffet lines are shortest and the beach strip is less crowded than ever. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the Habagat days and nights in Boracay. It usually begins in the month of June and then ends sometime November. Peak season begins in December until May. I luckily found myself spending one night in Boracay when I had to conduct a cluster meeting of health leaders coming from Romblon and Capiz. Since the most convenient location to conduct the meeting was in Boracay Island, we converged on the island and discussed concerns about public health issues. I was there with a team at least an afternoon before the meeting so we had time to scout the area for a meeting venue and even dip in the famous Boracay blue waters. We stayed at Boracay Courtyard which is a much cheaper version of La Carmela de Boracay...

Skansen Open-Air Museum

Image
One of the most interesting places I visited while in Sweden was Skansen. Skansen is actually an open-air museum and a zoo all in one. Stepping inside this huge museum is like stepping into early 19th century Sweden. This is the place to visit historic Sweden in miniature. 150 farms and dwellings from different parts of the country were disassembled and transported here. in Skansen, one can visit charming town districts with glass blowing, pottery, a tinsmith’s workshop and a bakery, a gold-colored manor house, the Skogaholm manor house, the beautiful eighteenth-century Seglora wooden church and the The museum shop is a must for fans of traditional handicrafts. You can also see all of the animals native to Scandinavia such as moose, bears, lynxes, wolves, wolverines and seals. There is also a terrarium, a monkey house and a children’s zoo. During our visit in Skansen, the Swedes were celebrating Midsummer. It is located on an island (DjurgÃ¥rden) in Stockholm. You can either ride...

The Filipino "Upper Lip": Snapshots of the Philippine Floods

Image
Last week, the Philippines was hit with yet again another disastrous calamity. There was no typhoon within the vicinity of the Philippines but Metro Manila and nearby provinces were hit by rising flood waters. It was almost "Ondoy" for many. "Ondoy" was the local name of a typhoon that struck the region a few years back and caused so much damage due to heavy rains and flooding. The heavy rains last week was due to the monsoon made more severe by a distant typhoon names Haikui. I was in Manila when the flood waters struck and I saw first hand how a seemingly innocent downpour can create such havoc. Almost every highway and avenue in the metropolis was underwater. Residences near the main rivers traversing through the Metro experienced the worst. But Filipinos are known for our resilience and once again we displayed this character for the world to see. As a tribute to the Filipino resilience and the bravery of the rescuers and the generosity of nameless people w...

Going Medieval In Olde Hansa

Image
During an overnight stay in Estonia, one of the places my friends and I visited was Olde Hansa. Olde Hansa is a medieval-inspired restaurant right in the middle of the Old Town in Talinn. The place was built and named in honor of the Hanseatic League. Upon entering the place, I couldn't help but feel like I was entering a hobbit's pub just like in the Lord of the Rings movie. It was really like stepping inside a time machine and going back to the days of old when knights roam the countryside rescuing damsels in distress. We were ushered in by a beautiful maiden who gave us our seats and our menus to choose from. The list was also very medieval. The list included Divine leg of pork with beer syrup, "Pepper Bag" fillet mignon and Braised sauerkraut with meat. There are other specialties like the grand leg of duck in saffron sauce and smoke-grilled salmon with salmon eggs. Of course, there is a variety of drinks that could satisfy a thirsty serf. There is d...

Backpacking in Zamboanga Day Two

Image
On the second day of our whirlwind trip in Zamboanga Peninsula, we had early breakfast at the Municipal cafeteria of Gutalac and proceeded immediately to the Rural health Unit. It was already 8:30am when we visited the RHU and the place was already busy with patients. We were able to meet two mothers in the RHU, one gave birth the night before, the other was about to give birth. As far as I can remember, it was the first time that the first mother delivered her baby in the facility and it was a good choice. She was multiparous. For the second mother, it was her first pregnancy and she looked excited and anxious as well. She was already in active labor when we came. We were able to converse with them and with their family members. By 9am, we proceeded to the Sanggunian Hall where we conducted the maternal death review of Gutalac with the Mayor being the lead facilitator. It was well attended by the councilors, health staff and other department heads particularly the DSWD. It was...
