Ghosts Caught In Cell Cam

Image
I am currently trying to finish a report for my case presentation tomorrow. I am frm 24 hours duty and I have recently found out that one of the consultants wanted a particular case to present for tomorrow's Tuesday Conference. I have already prepared my viral encephalitis case last week and now I have ONE DAY to prepare for a viral hepatitis case. Good thing Dr. Escaniel allowed me to be off the floor right before lunch time so I can start with my slides and my study. I already started my researching last night while I was on duty and I was up until 3 a.m. just making notes and copying the latest labs and therapeutic index of the case. Anyway, I am almost done now. The past few days have been pretty exciting for the PGIs. After the hoolaballoo over my most controversial blog yet(wink wink!), everything went back to the way it has been. This week is my last week in Pediatrics and this Friday I will be rotating in OB-GYNE. So far the last head count was: Bayen - 40s something admiss...

Losers and Winners.

I have survived my 6th Grand Rounds Presentation yesterday. The presentation was attended by the bigwigs in the field of Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery and even from other departments like Internal Medicine and OB-GYNE. The presentation took about an hour and a half. And when I was done, I felt a heavy weight being lifted off my chest. I survived my grilling. I did not die. I survived. The best part was when my fellow PGIs huddled around me, shook my hands and gave me taps on my shoulders saying, "well done!" Even my consultant, Dra. Amanted, our Pediatric Neurologist, approached me and shook my hand. She told me it was very good. And that alone was enough. I had to contain myself from crying. I could not believe how I pulled it through. Thank God for the strength and the inspiration. I felt Him with me throughout my entire presentation. And I did not fail myself. But what also actually drove me to make my presentation as excellent as I could was a comment posted in my previou...

For All The Skeptics Out There!

I have just closed my 125-slide presentation for this Thursday. All it needs is some finishing touches like slide transitions and stuff. Now I can get into this blog and whip up some nice rant. So, okay, Gabby told me earlier this morning how a doctor she was assisting at the OR started talking about the latest results of the Medical Board Exams. Last year's PGI at BOLMSH, the four of them, all passed the exams, making it a hundred percent for BOLMSH (perhaps for the first time? I don't know). Anyway, then this doctor started talking about the pioneer batch of the College of Medicine of USLS (who happens to be - us!) and how she said that we won't even make it pass 1% next year. "First graduates of La Salle? Hmp.. they will be zero percent!" she said and I am paraphrasing here. Gabby told me how she felt bad about it. Good thing that doctor had Gabby for her second assist. If I was the one holding the suction I would have dropped it on the floor, reached for the n...

Countdown to Grilltime

Six days before I will be murdered before the very eyes of my fellow PGIs. But honestly now, I am at the moment nervous and quite excited to present during my grand rounds presentation. Sure I am not ready yet with my protocol and my slides are not finished yet but somehow there is that teenee weenee voice inside my head that tells my that everything will be fine. Sure, I will be questioned to the death, whacked with difficult queries but what the heck! What's 2 hours of ball-jacking compared with a year in Hell's Lounge during my JIship? But I have to prepare, right? So all guns are clocked up and I shall be raring to go come Thursday of next week. And if I die a martyr's death, I only request a nice monument a la P. Tan (Patricio Tan) be placed inside the PGIs On-Call Room. Tomorrow I shall be on duty. I cannot as of this time make a nice, sensible, coherent blog until I am done with my Grand Rounds.

Optical Illusions

I am supposed to rant about some debate some of us guys have about the definite meaning of "dating". However, I am short of time and am trying to finish my grand rounds presentation. So, I am posting instead some pictures Gerard took. Ciao Amigos! Quench that Big thirst, gesper! Whenever there is fun, there's always a giant coca cola! Skyflakes...as big as the sky itself! Big spoon for the Big Boys! Maggi Soy sauce. Now in Mega Liters! Drink me up! No wonder the pen is mightier than the sword!

Because We Scare...

We were hanging out this morning in the On Call Room and Melvin told us about what happened about 2 nights ago when one of the Nursery nurses saw a "man" inside the delivery room. Okay, you may wonder what is so weird about that. Number one, no one can enter the nursery and/or labor room unless he or she is a staff member. Now, no male persons are members of the staff of the nursery and labor room except for the male PGIs who may be on duty and Dr. Gamboa, the lone male Pediatrician if he's on duty. That evening, I was the only male PGI on duty and no other male persons on duty. Number two, the nurse saw a "man" at around past 10 pm in the evening, when I was already inside our own on call room perhaps preparing to sleep. Number three, it would be impossible for anyone - any man - for that matter to be staying inside the delivery room (which is just adjacent to the nursery) since in the first place there was no patient being mounted for delivery. The DR was ligh...

Mega Frenzy!

I just came from a 24 hour shift and I am working overtime on my grand rounds presentation. Count down: it is 11 days from now. So not enought time to write a good whip of blog here. But Andylou was asking me where do I get these nice nude arts I usually use as wallpaper in my cellphone. Well, i told him to go to deviantart.com Below are some of my favourites. Weather and Reports

Three storms in one week! For 5 days I have been going home always wet and drenched with cold rain. The streets are flooded, jeepney rides are crowded and my whacked tooth isn't helping either. I really need a dentist, fast! Come 24 of August I will be having my Pedia grand rounds. I am at the moment finishing up my slides. Looks like it is going to be more than a hundred slides. The pictures and the video clip I inserted are taking up much of the slides. But these are very important. My case is a pediatric surgical case and it needs visuals in the aid of my explanation. But prior to Aug 24, I will also be having a case presentation. This is entirely different from the pedia grand rounds. I have chosen a neuro case, just to break the monotony of simple cases. Over-confident? Nah, just had this obsessive addiction to self torture. Anyway, I had to stop blogging now. My subject for my grand rounds had 13 hospital days and I am still on the first day. And I haven't even started on...

The Tigidong Dance

Note: don't let your PGIs run around your hospital during their snack breaks under the rain. This stormy weather can have some mental effects on people. Another final note: If you ain't Filipino, you won't understand a thing. The upside: you get to witness the lunacy of the Post graduate interns of BOLSMH. Okay, the ultimate final note: The guy in the video is Andy Mangubat who is at the moment trying to practice his final Tigidong dance for our upcoming Christmas party. Launch in external player

Second Chances

It was an ordinary Tuesday until Leah, my fellow PGI, started telling us the story of her life, or at least a cross-section of that life, more particularly what happened last night. She told us how she happened to discover that her boyfriend was allegedly cheating on her. All PGIs inside the on call room were all ears, including Mark Agana who was then FD and initially decided to go down the dorm and sleep. She told us how one day, while she and her bf was sauntering around town, she happened to read a text message on her bf's cellphone. The message was allegedly from a female, who endearingly called her bf Langga (sweet). Intrigued and already steaming with jealousy, she tried to send a text message to the number which appeared on her bf's cell, pretending to be her bf. To make the long story short, this female text messenger was later sending text messages to Leah's phone looking for her bf, inviting him to a night out somewhere. Leah confronted her bf through text messa...

The Silence of the Spams

It has been a while since I wrote down a healthy dose of blog. Lately, I had another one of those "post-coital" headache attacks last Friday I could hardly lift my fingers to key in the dictates of the subconscious mind. The headache was brought about by my most toxic duty yet last Thursday. I had no admissions (thank God) but early in the morning, a young boy was admitted in the department due to difficulty of breathing and unresponsiveness. I saw this kid earlier at the ER about a month ago and comparing to the kid I saw before, this one didn't look good. The young kid had brainstem tumor and by this time the tumor has grown enough to cause all these herniation symptoms we were all staring at: unresponsiveness, pinpoint pupils, irregular breathing, not to mention the already paralyzed left side of the child. He was admitted and I could not stand to look at the worried eyes and faces of his mother and father. The prognosis wasn't good. True enough, at around 3:00 a.m...

Dinner For A Cost

Image
I was OD during my wife's birthday and we have both decided to celebrate it with the rest of the family the day after, when I am already FD. I called her up to greet her and re-greet her teasing her about the gift I was to give her for her birthday (though in reality I was then still yet to buy her a gift). On my way to our computer store I went around downtown to go look for her a gift. It was my first time since ages to go around downtown area where Roann and I used to stroll around after class, just look around and window shop, during our pre-med days. I bought her a watch. While I was on it, I bought a watch also for myself. I arrived at our computer store to find out that my sister's the one treating us for dinner and it was not only the six of us but even our relatives in my mother side and father side. We arrived at Imay's where my sister was already there waiting for us inside the function room with my cousins Ryan, Ian Roy, Bing, and Daday. Later, the rest of the e...
