Reminiscing Lincoln

Image
During our trip to the US last April, we were studying Abraham Lincoln as our model for leadership. Abraham Lincoln is said to be America's most beloved President. His presidency, his life in fact, was not always perfect and smooth sailing. Even before he was successful in being elected to the Presidency, he experienced many failures, both in his personal and professional life. Among the most touching episodes in his life was the deaths of his sons. Out of the four sons he had, only one grew up to be an adult. The deaths of their children even drove his wife almost to the brink of madness. Lincoln and his wife had to suffer depression because of these tragedies. The very day he won the election, the Southern States left the Union and the US Civil War began. It was his job to preserve the Union and ensure equality and liberty for all Americans regardless of race. Abraham Lincoln was after all the Great Liberator. During our trip to Springfield, Illinois, we visited his house. We wen...

Candoni's Moment: Behind The Scenes

Image
It was a tribute to an undeserving person but in reality it was a tribute to the unsung heroes of Candoni. When TV5 came over to Candoni to document the life of a regular doctor to the barrio, it was our RHU's time to shine. Rarely do TV networks come to this small town in Negros Occidental and do a feel-good story about its people. We are thankful to the people of TV5 for choosing us to be featured in AKO MISMO (shown every Thursday 9:30pm at TV5). It was a lovely surprise for me especially when my staff started giving their gifts. Even my family was brought from Bacolod to Candoni to attend a small get-together at Villa Cornelia resort in Sipalay. I was not worthy of this special tribute but it was as if Somebody from a near distance was trying to re-affirm me. This small affirmation was just what I needed at this moment in my life. The road to doing service for the less fortunate continues. It doesn't stop here. Thank you TV5.

Getting Sunburned at The Caribbean

Image
Summer is about to end and we just couldn't let the Summer Sun pass without basking underneath its fiery glory and receive the blessings of a sunburn. So, with only less than a week of preparation, the family decided to spend one weekend at the Caribbean Water Park at Goldenfields, Bacolod. It was my first time to visit the place and it was truly a place worth-visiting. The Caribbean contains two pools, the bigger pool contains two giant slides, a sunken pirate ship, a lighthouse and mini islands. The smaller pool on the other hand has the giant figure of Poseidon, king of the sea, and other Disney Characters. It even has a huge bucket which would tip over giving a huge splash of water. It is definitely a nice place. An entrance fee of 100 pesos allows you to swim for free already in both pools and use the free tables and chairs located around the place. There are also cottages and cabins for rent. It is a place for the family to enjoy especially in this hot summer season. The kids...

The Difficult Part of Letting Go

Image
There are moments in your life when one has to release and let go. We let go of things, of feelings, of people. It is a difficult action. For one, it is hard to uproot one's self from the attachments of life. We find it hard to give away an object of sentimental value. We find it hard to separate ourselves from people we have learned to like. Most of all, it is hard, perhaps the hardest of all, to let go of emotions, for they entrench themselves in the deepest possible recesses of a human being: his soul. It is hard to let go because letting go means accepting the fact that change is coming. And change is filled with uncertainties. We fear the unknown, what it will bring to us, the potential harm that it can bring us. The threat of change alone spins our world into the realm of vertigo, of confusion, of anxiety, grinding to the point of nausea. However, like all things in life, to let go can be as necessary as breathing in order to live. Letting go can be the important transition t...

Back In The Philippines

Image
The heat, the dust, the traffic, the sound of jeepneys, the scent of rice...yup, I am back in the Philippines all right. The 3 weeks spent in the US felt like it all happened in just one day. Time flew so fast. So many things have happened while in the States. I have officially visited 6 states (7 if you include the District of Columbia) These are Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Virginia and Georgia. I have met new friends and acquaintances. Next week I will be emailing some of these friends to begin my professional networking with them. I have learned so much about America and Americans. I too have learned much about my being a Filipino and other Filipinos as well. Highlights of the US trip: 1. The Tiklos dance of the Filipinos - during the welcome luncheon and their repeat performance at Ethnotopia. 2. Trip to Chicago at the Willis Tower Skydeck and Millenium Park 3. Trip to Springfield, Illinois 4. Visiting Downers Grove North High School - it is definitely better than televisi...
