Heart Month: Flashback

Image
Tomorrow will be the launching of our new Healthy Lifestyle Program in Candoni: the iCANDONI - "The Candonian Lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle". Health is everyone's responsibility. It is nonetheless difficult to maintain our health. The rigors and discipline of healthy living can be frustrating at times. But we need to motivate ourselves to maintain our healthy lifestyle. It is difficult but it is not impossible. We can be healthy. So, the new shout out from Candoni is: "iCANbehealthy, iCANDONI!" The video featured here is the summary of the HL program of Candoni since I started working there as a doctor to the barrio. Tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., we will be having a motorcade from Brgy. Caningay to Barangay Banga and back to the Public Plaza for our launching of iCANDONI. We will also be launching our new HATAW steps and the official hataw music for our Interbarangay Hataw Dance Contest which will be held on February 25, 2010. So, let's paint the town red and c...

Candonian Beauties

Image
During every festival in the Philippines, the town or city would always crown a Festival Queen. Candoni is no exception. For the third year since I began working as a DTTB, Candoni will be holding another Beauty Search dubbed as the Lin-ay sang Tabla Valley. Tabla Valley refers to the area surrounding Candoni. After all, the town is nestled right in the middle of the Tabla Valley located South of Negros Occidental. The beauty queens are sponsored by each municipal department. During the first year, RHU and Tourism teamed up and our candidate won 1st runner up. During the second year RHU and Treasurer's Office teamed up and our candidate won Ms. Tabla Valley! This year, RHU and Treasurer's Office are still teamed up but this time the Assessor's Office was attached to us. So the other day we accompanied our candidates to Villa Cornelia in Sipalay for the pictorials. The candidates flaunted themselves in their swim wear. After the solo shots, sponsoring departments had their p...

The (Not So) Typical Week in the RHU

Image
What a week. And I thought I could not finish the week due to my very tight schedule. All part of the MHO's work. Monday : Conducted a refresher's course with the staff on History Taking and Physical Examination. I had to refresh my nurses and midwives on the proper history taking and some basic maneuvers in physical examination. History taking and physical exam is not an exclusive domain of medical doctors. Any medical professional must need to know these skills. Tuesday : Despite the long line of patients seeking consultation, I was able to insert an important meeting with the Festival Committee regarding our budget proposals. I am the chairman of the First Aid committee. I was also happy to hear that my suggestion of including the BAHAY KUBO as an official symbol to the Dinagyaw Festival was taken by the Festival Committee. In fact, one of the special prizes for the Dinagyaw Streetdancing Competition will be Best in Bahay Kubo. I feel that I have contributed something to the...

iCANDONI

Last week, as part of our capability building sessions, the Rural Health Midwives underwent basic encoder's training. Our target is to become "paperless" and eventually create a database for our FHSIS. The midwives were taught about the computer. It was intimidating at first for many of them especially the older ones but as soon as they were able to learn how to maneuver the mouse and basically turn on the computer, they were already enjoying it. They learned how to encode their FHSIS data in excel and appreciated the value of not calculating for the sum. All they need to do is just encode the numbers and the computer will solve the sum and even the percentage for them. It will even give them an analysis of whether they have reached their targets or not. The other health staff were then taught about Epi Info and how to encode properly our OPD data. We now have a database of all patients who have so far sought consultation in our Main health Center and it is now easy to re...

Philhealth Accredited

Image
Candoni RHU is Philhealth Accredited (TB DOTS and OPB). Yesterday, Philhealth representatives visited the facility to inspect our Delivery Room. We have applied for MCP accreditation as well. I am confident that before the middle of the year, we will be MCP accredited.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Image
First order of business for the RHU of Candoni was to review our performance for 2009. There are bright spots and there are areas that require a lot of improvement. For example, we have improved our rate of facility-based deliveries and rate of deliveries attended by skilled health workers. However, our Fully Immunized Children coverage decreased tremendously compared to our commendable performance last 2008. Part of our annual PIR is to identify gaps and think of solutions that can help us improve for this year. As always many issues have been threshed out and we have identified our goals for the present year. So, for 2010, we have agreed to give full attention to maternal and child care, among other things. Of course, we will sustain our focus on our Case Detection for TB (which by the way improved tremendously in 2009) and at the same time continue our Newborn Screening Program, Nutrition Program and Disease Surveillance System. In fact, this coming Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be...

What Happened In New Year's Eve

Image
Just posted a video of our family celebrating the coming of the New Year. The song I Got A Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas is used in this video without any intention of violating copyrights. It's just that this song I think is the best hit of 2009 and aptly describes the memorable event for my family. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ut0NJWOIs0 This video was edited by Imagemixer and the shots were my first try while handling my first video cam I bought during the last day of 2009.

New Year's Eve

Image
The New Year's eve celebrations at home last night was by far the best that we ever had. We bought so many fireworks we still have some left for the following night. We also prepared so many food we had a hard time trying to fit them all in our small refrigerator. It was a fun night and I had fun especially taking videos of our celebration. I bought a video cam out of my savings from my DTTB salary as my remembrance of my DTTB experience. December 31, 2009 is my last day as a DTTB. I am now "devolved". After the fireworks, we all went inside our dining room, had our traditional family prayers and then ate our media noche dinner: the ever-present spaghetti, salad, cakes, chicken, ham, drinks, sweets, soup, etc. While having our media noche dinner, we all watched the videos I took earlier on TV. The kids were enjoying it, especially my daughter who was screaming every time we lit up one of our fireworks. She also tried holding one of those sparklers we bought and was enjoyi...
