Part of the requirements of my medical students is to prepare a health promotion package for a particular health program. They are to make a poster, a brochure, a training manual and a 2-minute TV ad promoting their chosen health programs. There are four health programs to promote: Maternal and Child Health, Anti-Dengue Drive, Immunization and Tuberculosis.      I have visited many museums but perhaps this is one museum that I have quite enjoyed visiting. It is the Wine Museum in Mijas, Spain. Part of the tour of Mijas in Malaga was a quick visit in the Museo del Vino. Located just in the middle of the historic town of Mijas, the museum offers a journey through the history and the culture of the wine of the distinctive province of Malaga. Well, I wasn't there really to learn the culture and history more than to taste the variety of Spanish wines.      A professional oenologist demonstrated to us how wine is tested and then without any further delay poured various wines to taste. The wine list includes cavas, noble wines, table wines, reds and roses. In a few hours from now, the Summer Olympics of 2012 will begin in London. Everyone will be watching this greatest sport event. Of course, everyone is anticipating the opening ceremonies in London which have been kept from the prying eyes and ears of the media. What we know so far is that the title of the show will be "Isle of Wonder" and Hollywood directors Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldrey are the ones in charge of this spectacle. What I personally look forward to is the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. Part of my work is to visit far-flung areas in the country and help them address the perennial problem of maternal and infant deaths. As of the latest stats, the maternal mortality ratio of the country is 221 per 100,000 live births. So, last Friday, just as I was about to leave the office for a fun weekend, I was told to go to Zamboanga Peninsula to visit two far-flung municipalities: Gutalac and Siayan. This is not my first time to visit Zamboanga but it will be my first time to commute around the peninsula. Gutalac and Siayan are in Zamboanga del Norte. And because it was at the spur of the moment, I would be travelling without cash-advanced from the office. This sounded like an adventure. When I decided to do a whirlwind trip to Stockholm (Sweden), it was imperative that I shouldn't leave the city without visiting the famous Vasa. The Vasa is a Swedish military ship that sank after sailing less than 2 kilometers into its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. In the 1950's, it was salvaged and was housed in a temporary museum called Wasavarvet until 1987 and then moved to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm where it is presently located. According to literature, "Vasa was built top-heavy and had insufficient ballast. Despite an obvious lack of stability in port, it was allowed to set sail and foundered only a few minutes after it first encountered a wind stronger than a breeze. One of the many activities while I was in Cozumel, Mexico was visiting the Chankanaab National Park. The park is considered a conservation area for fauna and flora after being decreed a national park in the year 1980. It is located south of Cozumel just along the coast line. You can either take a cab or rent a car. Upon entering the Park, you get to choose which activity would you want to do. I chose the Dolphin Royal Swim package. The Dolphin Royal Swim entitles you to swim with not just one but two dolphins! It includes the famous foot push, where two dolphins will raise you up the water surface by pushing you from the bottom of your feet. When I visited Helsinki, I had the great opportunity to visit a sea fortress called Suomenlinna. Suomenlinna is a maritime fortress located off the coast of Helsinki. It is also a garrison town and a base for archipelago navy. The construction of the fortress began in 1748. In 1991, the fortress was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique monument of military architecture. There is a ferry in Kauppatori that would take visitors to the island. You won't miss the port since it is also where the Helsinki seat of government is located and an area where tourists can buy souvenirs and even fresh sea foods and other fruits. The ferry departs from the eastern side of Kauppatori, opposite the President’s Castle. At Suomenlinna the ferry departs from the main pier on Iso Mustasaari island. Perhaps one of the best white sand beaches the Philippines has is Dakak. It is a much smaller strip compared to Boracay and definitely less commercialized but I feel that Dakak Beach Resort in Dapitan is something that we can also be proud of. Dakak is more than just a beach resort. It is basically a hotel and park nestled in the coast of Zamboanga del Norte. It is around 20-30 minutes away from Dipolog City. You can arrange a van from the hotel to pick you up at Dipolog airport. Once arriving in Dakak, I remember having received a complimentary welcome drink. After checking in, I was brought to my room which looked like a native hut but with the modern amenities anyone can find in a 3-star hotel. The Resort has two swimming pools meandering in the center of the place with man-made falls and coconut trees surrounding the area. Wi-fi is available at the bar and reception area. Since the X-Factor Philippines was launched in ABS-CBN a few weeks ago, I have been hooked to watching the show. I never expected that after so many singing competitions already that came, there are still many untapped and raw singing talents in the country. Two weeks ago, I was invited to attend the 2nd Corporate Social Responsibility Workshop of the Chamber of Mines. Around 22 mining companies, represented by their Community Relations Officers, were present during the workshop. The venue was in the facilities of PHILEX Minig Corporation in Tuba, Benguet. We left Manila at around 5am and met up with the group in Baguio City near the Lakaoan airstrip. It took us around 4 hours to travel to Baguio City, my second time this year. From Baguio City, the convoy traveled to the PHILEX Mining Corporation facility through the winding roads crawling over the Cordillera mountains. It was my first time to travel to these parts of Luzon. It was also my first time to visit a mining company. After almost an hour of traveling over the mountain ridges, we reached the guest house of PHILEX where we had lunch and a quick rest. Security was tight inside the mining company's facility. I belong to the Home Along Da Riles Generation. Every Thursday, I would always look forward to watching the most watched TV comedy series of the 90's. Dolphy, Nova Villa and the rest of the cast of Home Along were more than just hilarious. Home Along was a household word. No comedy series has perhaps surpassed Home Along da Riles. It was after all a multi-awarded show in the 1990's. The humor was different. It was a bit slapstick but it wasn't "trying hard". It was very conservative. No innuendos. Just plain humor. Now, Dolphy, the King of Comedy is dead. No comedian can ever replace the "king". He is now a legend. And I am honored to have been part of that generation who laughed and cried with Dolphy. There are many places where you can stay if you are in Zamboanga City but if you are in a tight budget, Cecille's Pension House is a place you might want to consider. Located in Tumaga Porcentro, it is basically 10-minutes away from the International Airport. If you haven't arranged a free transportation ahead of time, you can ride a tricycle and it will only cost you 30-50 pesos. Owned by an Ilonggo family, Cecille's Catering and Pension House is more like a resort than just a pension house. It is a complex with at least 30 rooms, including dorms, and twin-bed rooms. Cheapest rooms are of course the dorm types. The more expensive ones are those by the poolside. The place is also good for receptions and other dining events. It has two huge conference rooms and a good-sized parking lot. It also has a coffee shop and a bar by the poolside.
