How To Make The Class Less Boring: Tips For Teachers

Image
Let's face it. Some people are just not born to be teachers. Sure, they are smart and they can pretty much teach you the entire book. But teaching is more than just telling the students what they need to learn. After all, learning is an experience and as a teacher, you are ought to facilitate an experience that is worth-remembering as the facts and figures and diagrams you teach in your classroom. So, being a teacher myself, here are some tips culled out from personal experience on how to make your students more attentive and your class less boring. Tip No. 1: Know That Each Student Is Unique There are basically three types of learners: those who learn with their eyes, those who learn with their ears and those who learn with their hands. It is important that you must have a general sense of your class what type of learners are dominant in the group. If you feel that a class learns well with their eyes, then make your presentations more visually appealing. Use diagrams and char...

Chief Justice Corona: Storified

Image
Today, the Senate Impeachment Court will listen to the final oral arguments of the Prosecution and the Defense. The Senator-Judges will then deliberate and decide whether to acquit or convict the Chief Justice. It is expected that by Tuesday, the final verdict of the impeachment court will be released. If that happens, it will be the first in our history. Even before the verdict will be out, Filipinos are already divided into what the verdict should be. How To Appear "Pro" In Your First Day In The Gym

Image
It has been 6 months since I enrolled myself in a gym. The objective was really to lose the extra pounds, having gained so much after a 6-month hiatus since I got off the cruise ship. It was my first time to enroll in a gym as a member but it wasn't my first time to get inside a gym. My first time was aboard the cruise ship where I used to work as a Medi-Spa physician. The gym was after all just a floor down my clinic. So after clinic hours, I would head to the gym and do some running and weights. For a newbie, stepping inside a gym can be intimidating. The numerous machines can be very confusing. Here are some few tips on how to appear "pro" inside the gym. Know Your Goal First. It is important to know what your motivations why you enrolled in a gym in the first place. In this way, you don't have to frustrate yourself with unrealistic goals. My motivation was simply to lose weight and tone some muscles a bit. Start simple. You don't need to use all of ...

How To Build A Team

Image
I am always asked whenever I am invited to speak in a leadership training or seminar how does one make a group cohesive. Team-building is always a tricky and tedious process and one which does not happen in a day or two. Of course, team-building exercises can help initiate the process but they are not sufficient. For any group or organization to be successful, it is important that the members, and most especially the "leaders", must learn how to understand the dynamics within the group. No one strategy is superior and one may even entail to use many strategies to make the team more united. Be that as it may, there are many ways you can build a team. 1. Acknowledge the fact that there is no two members who are the same . Each member of the team is unique. From personality to styles of learning to sets of skills, every member of the team is unique down to the very tip of his hair. Recognizing this fact enables the team leader to be conscious with his or her dealings with th...

The Rise of Jessica Sanchez

Image
When Philip Philips won Season 11 of the popular American Idol, fans of Jessica Sanchez, the eventual runner-up, still showed their support to the 16-year old diva and unofficially declared her the "World Idol". There can be some truth to this considering that outside the United States, Jessica Sanchez has more followers than Philip Philips. For one, The Philippines and Mexico are already rooting for Jessica, considering that she is actually Filipino-Mexican in heritage. Her mother is a pure Filipina and her father is Mexican-American. The whole world loved Jessica Sanchez. She is after all the better singer than Philip Philips. I felt that it was high time for American Idol to crown a female champion. Still, the American fans would want yet another "white guy with a guitar" to be their American Idol. Many fans were disappointed that Jessica didn't win. Just like this cute little girl when upon learning that Jessica lost cried so hard and was so mad that she w...

Lady Gaga: Storified

Lady Gaga's Manila concert is now over. Fans who went to see her concert still couldn't forget what a "memorable" night it was for all of them. Lady Gaga is leaving the country but the debate on morality and freedom of expression will still linger and perhaps will continue to divide what appears to be a changing Filipino society. Capturing the various reactions in social networks, here's my storify article regarding the brouhaha over Lady Gaga's Born This Way concert and how her brand of music may divide a once-conservative Filipino nation. Leaning Tower of Pisa

Image
When our shp docked in Livorno, Italy, I told myself that I really must go to Pisa, which is just a train ride away. So, as soon as the ship docked in the port of Livorno, I found my way out of the pier, met some tourists who were also looking for a bus station or something where they would wait for a ride to the train station. I told them that I was looking for the same as well so we all walked together, trying to ask for directions from friendly locals who were eager to tell us but only in Italian. We finally stopped a nice Italian man driving a car for directions. He didn't give us directions. Instead, he let us hopped inside his car and he told us he would drive us all the way to the train station since his flat was on the way. That was really friendly of him. It was at the train station that I parted ways with my new found friends (who were a couple from Norway). I then headed to the ticket station but was quite unsure how to buy tickets. I then met a Filipina who asked me whe...

The Issue On Population Issues 2/3

Image
The great desire of the RH bill is actually to lower maternal deaths through improving maternal health care. There is no argument here. Maternal health should be a priority of the government. In fact, with or without the bill, maternal health is already part of the Department of Health’s program ever since, the reason why I feel there is no need to have a bill or law on this since there have been many laws in the past concerning this. The problem with the Philippine government is its lack of implementation of these laws and programs. Based on personal observation, among the reasons why government could not implement maternal health care in the past is because 1) lack of prioritization when it comes to budget appropriation for health. This is true both on the National and Local government. Many politicians don’t feel they should give more money to our health care workers and the health programs of the government. The thinking is still dole-out and for many politicians, the mere fact...

Diablo III: The Long-awaited Sequel

Image
I remember back in my college days when I used to play this popular RPG, Diablo II. For me, Diablo I and II basically started the movement of RPG and MORPG. After having played and re-played it many times, I was always wondering if Blizzard would eventually release a sequel to Diablo II. Eventually, on May 15, 2012, Blizzard did officially release Diablo III. It is basically the "Return of evil". According to the official website, "Twenty years have passed since the Prime Evils were defeated and banished from the world of Sanctuary. Now you must return to Tristram and investigate rumors of a fallen star, an omen that the End Times have begun." Diablo III added more environmental and monster variety, more diverse classes, and a number of unique elements that have since become synonymous with the franchise. Both games established the series' hallmarks: randomized levels, the relentless onslaught of monsters and events in a perpetually fresh world, unique quests...

While In Koper

Image
Every week, our ship would dock in Koper, a coastal town in Slovenia, facing the Adriatic Sea. Koper is one of the main road entry points into Slovenia from Italy, which lies to the north of this large commercial port city. The first time I visited Koper, it was a sunny day and a perfect day to just wander around the meandering streets of the Old Town. It was a Sunday so I went inside the church and heard mass, in Croat. The cathedral was actually packed with mass goers. During the giving of the sign of peace, I was game in bowing my head and smiling around the people who were perhaps wondering how a brown man happened to be inside this Catholic Church filled with white folks. After the mass, I went around the Old Town and took some pictures. I even bought a 2-euro slice of pizza for lunch. During my second visit, it was actually raining but I happened to visit one of the malls in Koper. I even happened to notice a Filipina with her son who smiled back at me as if with the unders...

Alone In Toulon

Image
I never expected in my entire life that I could step on French soil even if it's just in Toulon, France. Toulon is located south of France and is actually a military harbor city. So when our ship docked in the port of Toulon, I took my little backpack with me and decided to go around the city alone by myself. It was definitely a moment for reflective walking, just wandering around the city. Plus, most of my shipmates were on port manning that day and there was supposedly a boat drill scheduled for half of the crew. Anyway, I didn't have a map with me so I just decided to follow the street signs and just basically wander around. I still couldn't believe that I am in France. Yes, it is no Paris or Marseilles but still, the French atmosphere was undeniable. With such limited time and without a car I could not really tour the entire city but what fascinated me was the coast line and the quiet hush in the neighborhood where I walked through. Like it? The Azores

Image
Portugal is not the first European country that I visited but it was definitely the first country I stepped in after a 2-week crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. And I didn't even reach mainland Portugal. I only found myself in the Azores, a chain of Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I was very excited to visit this place. I decided to venture out on my own and walk around the place. There are actually 9 islands comprising the Azores. It is actually an autonomous region, one of only 2 autonomous regions in Portugal. All of these islands are volcanic. Our ship docked at Ponta Delgada, the city located in Sao Miguel island. Based on population, it is the largest island. As soon as I stepped off the international port, which by the way is very beautiful, I immediately found my way to the Baixa or the downtown area where the municipal hall is also located. In the middle of the square is this stern-looking statue of St. Michael the Archangel. I then decided t...

The Issue On Population Issues Part1/3

Image
(This blog post was originally written on October of 2011) Since the verbal declaration of President Benigno Aquino III of his preference for artificial means of contraception as a method for controlling the population, the Filipino society has once again started talking about topics usually not even talked about within the typical Filipino home. The discussion on sex and abortion and contraception and even population control started way back when proponents submitted for legislation the Reproductive Health Bill at the Philippine Congress. The major objectives of the Reproductive Health Bill is to decrease maternal deaths and improve the lives of both mother and her offspring. Of course, the subliminal objective of this bill is to reduce the perceived ballooning population of the Philippines. Why Control the Population According to the proponents of population control, it is overpopulation that pushes the Filipino society to become poor, if not poorer. The usual analogy of the ...
