Leaning Tower of Pisa

When our shp docked in Livorno, Italy, I told myself that I really must go to Pisa, which is just a train ride away. So, as soon as the ship docked in the port of Livorno, I found my way out of the pier, met some tourists who were also looking for a bus station or something where they would wait for a ride to the train station. I told them that I was looking for the same as well so we all walked together, trying to ask for directions from friendly locals who were eager to tell us but only in Italian. We finally stopped a nice Italian man driving a car for directions. He didn't give us directions. Instead, he let us hopped inside his car and he told us he would drive us all the way to the train station since his flat was on the way. That was really friendly of him. It was at the train station that I parted ways with my new found friends (who were a couple from Norway). I then headed to the ticket station but was quite unsure how to buy tickets. I then met a Filipina who asked me where I was headed. I told her to Pisa. She then taught me how to buy tickets for the train. (For schedule of trains in Italy, you can check out this website of Trenitalia)

If I could remember correctly, it took me only 20 minutes to reach Pisa. As soon as I stepped out of the train station in Pisa, I had to look around and check my map to locate where the leaning tower of Pisa is. I then asked another Filipina which bus to board if I would go to Pisa. She pointed to the nearby bus station which is right across the train station, took a bus and got off right at the entrance that led to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I was able to travel from Livorno to Pisa all by myself! And barely spending more than 10 euros! The leaning tower is actually inside the Piazza di Miracoli. I could not believe my eyes. There it was, the leaning tower of Pisa. Before, I could only read in books everything I wanted to know about the tower. Now, I was standing right beside it.

While walking around, I met some of my shipmates who were already there busy taking pictures of the place. They asked me how I was able to get to Pisa and when I told them that it took me only maybe 6 euros to go to Pisa, they couldn't believe their ears. I heard they took a taxi from Livorno to Pisa which of course can be quite expensive even if you are many in a group. They decided to take the train as well going back to Livorno. A bus would usually pass by near the Piazza di Miracoli which would bring tourists to the Pisa Centrale station. Then of course, from Livorno Centrale station, a bus would then pass by and bring passengers to the pier.

It was really a breathtaking experience. I knew there was more in Pisa to just the leaning tower but due to time pressure, we decided to just stick around the Piazza di Miracoli, grab some munch in a nearby restaurant and just enjoy the day chatting. Before going back, we bought some souvenirs like key chains and shirts. I bought a University of Pisa college shirt to remember this experience.
