Inside Intramuros

Image
I went to Manila last weekend to do some "important" stuff and it happened that I had to go to Intramuros. This historic "Walled City" used to be the Center of Manila during the Spanish Occupation. It withstood the short-lived invasion of the British, the occupation of the Americans, the onslaught of the Japanese and the bombing of the Americans who came to liberate the city from the retreating Japanese. it survived earthquakes and typhoons. Most of its original buildings have been destroyed during World War II. Thus, the present structures were reconstruction of the originals. I had enough time to walk around Intramuros and even visit the Manila Cathedral and the historic San Agustin Church. Somehow, I could not help but think of my recent experience in Europe, when I was fortunate to visit similar ancient "Walled Cities" in Estonia and Sweden. Intramuros has the potential to be like those medieval towns in Estonia and Sweden where thousands of tourists w...

Icons: The Different Faces of Mary

Image
October, like the month of May, is also dedicated as a Marian Month, specifically for Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. It was no coincidence therefore when I strolled along the mall yesterday before my flight back home to Bacolod that I came upon an exhibition of Marian icons and images. I believe it was sponsored by Radyo Veritas, a Radio station owned by the Catholic Church. It was free admission but you can give some donation if you want. So I went in and was amazed by the various images of Our Lady, varying in sizes. All the icons and images portrayed Mary in the many milestones of her life. Most of the images portrayed Mary and her many virtues. So there was a Mary depicted as a little baby (La Bambina), as a child together with her Father St. Joachim and her Mother St. Anne, as a spouse of the Holy Spirit, as a Mother of Jesus and wife of Joseph and even when she fell into a deep sleep (Dormitio)before she was assumed into heaven body and soul. There are also many Marian images and i...

There Is No "I" in TEAM: SEAYLP Team Aguila In Action

Image
Last weekend, SEAYLP Team Aguila culminated its interaction with the students of Bacolod City National High School, particularly the members of the Honesty Club, with a team building session. Every week, members of Team Aguila (also known as Aguillers) would visit the Honesty Club and share with them their thoughts on leadership and the values that go along with it. This particular activity was in coordination with the BCBP or Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen & Professionals (BCBP). In one of their sessions, one Principal from a different school happened to be within the campus and expressed her desire to have the same kind of activity in her school. There is already an informal standing invitation to hold the same team building and leadership sessions in her school. The team-building activity was only a half-day activity but the kids from Bacolod City National High School learned a lot on leadership and what it means to be a team player. Among the activities the SEAYLP Aguiler...

30 Lessons Learned

The 30 Lessons learned in life. 1. I have learned that life is unfair, but it is not an excuse to stop living. 2. I have learned that some things take time, especially the best things in life. 3. I have learned that truth hurts. 4. I have learned that there are no guarantees. 5. I have learned that Destiny is a product of the choices we have made. 6. I have learned that every action has a consequence; how I react to the consequence is up to me. 7. I have learned that happiness is a matter of will. If I want it, then I will have it. 8. I have learned that I can still go on even after I no longer can. 9. I have learned that I may have the right to be angry, but I don't have the right to be cruel. 10. I have learned that the best way to defeat an enemy is to befriend him. 11. I have learned that every person has a story to tell. 12. I have learned that it can take a long while to become the person I want to be. 13. I have learned that just because someone doesn't love you the way...

The Cinemanatomy: Learning Anatomy the Fun Way

Part of the challenge of being a teacher is how to motivate the students to learn. Making them learn is one thing. Making the learning fun is another. So, stepping off from what I previously did during a Physiology class I handled last school year, I asked my Anatomy students to submit a video summarizing what they have learned about a specific human organ. Last school year it was the Physio-mercials, wherein the students applied Physiology concepts on a fictional product they were supposed to advertise. This time, the students in Anatomy were free to choose the kind of format they would want. They were only given a human organ to focus and some keywords they were supposed to integrate in their video. There were 5 groups and there were basically 5 different outputs: One video was actually a spoof of the popular TV series CSI, with the team investigating the victim's Liver. The other video was also a spoof of a popular local entertainment news, with Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda talkin...
