Icons: The Different Faces of Mary
October, like the month of May, is also dedicated as a Marian Month, specifically for Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. It was no coincidence therefore when I strolled along the mall yesterday before my flight back home to Bacolod that I came upon an exhibition of Marian icons and images. I believe it was sponsored by Radyo Veritas, a Radio station owned by the Catholic Church. It was free admission but you can give some donation if you want. So I went in and was amazed by the various images of Our Lady, varying in sizes. All the icons and images portrayed Mary in the many milestones of her life. Most of the images portrayed Mary and her many virtues.
So there was a Mary depicted as a little baby (La Bambina), as a child together with her Father St. Joachim and her Mother St. Anne, as a spouse of the Holy Spirit, as a Mother of Jesus and wife of Joseph and even when she fell into a deep sleep (Dormitio)before she was assumed into heaven body and soul.
There are also many Marian images and icons portrayed as Patroness of many various localities. Most of the images of Mary though was depicting her as Our Lady of the Rosary.
But there were other interesting icons. It was the first time I saw a Statue of Mary smiling with her teeth showing (Our Lady of Smiles). It was also the first time I saw Mary breastfeeding Baby Jesus, with her right breast exposed (Nuestra Seniora de Leche y Buen Parto).
I am not sure how long they will open the exhibition but for those interested, you can visit SM MOA beside the ice skating rink.
Viva Maria.
