Green and White Bags For Moms and Babies

Image
For this week (week 1), we were only able to collect enough items to make 13 green bags and 8 white bags. Which means, we will be giving a maximum of 13 bags for mothers who will be delivering their babies in our main health center for this week. If there will be less than 13 mothers who will deliver at the health center, the remaining bags will be carried over for the next week (week 2). The white bags will be given to mothers who will be bringing their kids to the Barangay health station for the Measles vaccine (to become fully immunized children). And since I only have 8 white bags, I will be choosing Barangay Agboy as my recipient barangay for this week. Barangay Agboy is one of my farthest Barangays and the population is quite small. However, the FIC rate is quite low compared to other barangays. So, this Wednesday (EPI Day), we will be going to Agboy to distribute 8 white bags to 8 kids who will be Fully Immunized Children. After dinner, my wife and I started packing the Green an...

Buntis Baby Bag Update No. 2

Image
So far, the following items have been donated by BS Bio 4th year students of USLS: noodles, multivitamins, baby clothes, baby toys, corned beef, disposable diapers and medicines for the mother. This morning my wife bought 11 kilos of rice, baby clothes and loin cloths and sardine canned goods to be added to the 12 Green bags already in my possession. Tomorrow, a transportation from the Mayor's Office will be coming to fetch me and the donations. Hopefully next week there will be another batch of green and white bags ready to be given to any qualified recipient.

Buntis Baby Bag Update No. 1

Image
I was happy today that I was able to receive seven paper and plastic bags filled with grocery items, multivitamins, diapers, and other baby stuff from fourth year BS Biology students of the University of Saint La Salle. I was told that some of the members of the Pre-med Society, the club exclusive for Bs Biology students, are pledging to sponsor bags for my initiated project. Some personally told me that they will be sending their bags either tomorrow or Tuesday. I was happy and was very touched. I thought I might not be able to collect at least 1 donated bag. I was already planning to push through with the project funded out of my own personal resources. My wife and I in fact already bought green and white plastic bags last week ready to be filled with items to be given to Mothers and Babies in Candoni. To remind my readers, the Buntis Baby Bag is a personal project I initiated in order to reward good health seeking behaviors among mothers in Candoni. The objective is to give these ba...

Rush of Angels

Image
I enter once more the lair of the Devil, where temptations await and my soul will be tested, as metal would be in the heat of the furnace. I have many struggles and some of them have been lost, a few have been won, but many still are yet to be resolved. Perhaps this moment of abandonment, when the creatures of light lead you to the side of evil, is yet another opportunity to prove to one's self that I do not belong to the dark world. And yet the trials that await for me are too much to bear that I already tremble even before I make my first step across the threshold. I fear the thought of losing myself, my idealism, my principles, the values I guard and promise never to compromise. I would force myself to believe that I can make it but the whispered taunts of the Tempter are as loud as the occasional thunder rolling over the barren plains of loneliness. The taunts are directed towards my self-esteem. Day by day the lies are getting louder and the more I listen to the lies, the more...

Raw Talents

The internet is filled with virals of amateur singers but quite surprisingly very talented ones. I have been scouring the youtube for videos of Filipino amateur singers and I have found quite a handful of purely talented ones, brimming with potentials, at least in my opinion they are. Bloodletting Activity With Red Cross

Image
Yesterday was our second to the last bloodletting activity for Candoni. It was also the second time Red Cross came over to conduct the bloodletting activity. Next week, the CLMMRH/PHO will be conducting the bloodletting activity. As expected, only a few came to donate because of the bad weather and some of the barangays committed to donate to CLMMRH/PHO instead. So, after 29 patients, I went to the reception area, filled out a form, and donated blood. It is my second time to donate blood. The first time I donated blood was when I was in med school, when our class sponsored a bloodletting activity on campus as part of our medical week celebration. It is my firm belief that donating blood is a heroic act. The blood you can donate can save lives, if not the lives of your family. Some people are afraid to donate blood because of so many "misconceptions" about bloodletting. Some are just plain afraid of needles and anything sharp. We are hoping to win the Sandugo Award again for 2...

A Filipino Is CNN's Hero Of The Year

Image
(CNN) -- Efren Peñaflorida, who started a "pushcart classroom" in the Philippines to bring education to poor children as an alternative to gang membership, has been named the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year. CNN's Anderson Cooper revealed Peñaflorida's selection at the conclusion of the third-annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night. The gala event, taped before an audience of 3,000 at the Kodak Theatre, premieres on Thanksgiving, November 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN. The broadcast, which honors the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2009, features performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Carrie Underwood, R&B crooner Maxwell and British pop sensation Leona Lewis. Peñaflorida, who will receive $100,000 to continue his work with the Dynamic Teen Company, was selected after seven weeks of online voting at CNN.com. More than 2.75 million votes were cast. "Our planet is filled with heroes, young a...

It's Been A Long Road

Image
The weekend is slow and I had an opportunity to scan old photographs of high school memories at home. I came upon pictures of our high school plays. My classmates and I were fond of presenting plays and performing on stage. Our first try was when we were first year high school students. I was able to write and direct a play entitled Under the Spell. It was about vampires and how one vampire feel in love with a human being (sounds familiar now? wink wink). There were no werewolves though but if given the chance to produce a sequel of that stageplay, we might have had considered. The Under the Spell play won Best Play, Best Production, Best Sounds, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Make up, Best Director and Best Script. Because of our success during the Freshmen plays, our class was chosen to represent the school during the First Interschool Handurawan Playfest. In 1995(?) we presented the New Yorker in Tondo and was able to receive a citation for Outstanding Producti...

I Am A Lighthouse

Image
(This post was originally shared with Facebook friends only.) Whenever life's storms come our way, we have an option: We can be like a drifting raft, helplessly swaying along the will of the strong winds. Or, we can be lighthouses, standing strong against the blowing cruelties of life. Drifting rafts are people without principles. When a challenging situation comes, they do not know where to place themselves or their principles. Thus, they change color according to the situation. That is how they survive. In the end, they lose their identity. Lighthouses are people anchored deeply on their principles and values. When a challenging situation comes, they prefer to stay the course, and stand firm on what they believe, never compromising the fundamental principles they were brought up from the beginning. There are times that I behave like a drifting raft, too coward to shout against the insinuations of life's cruelties. And there are times that I behave like a lighthouse, determine...

What The Cards Say

Image
I don't believe in Tarot Cards or fortune telling but I have to admit that I sometimes read my horoscopes for the sake of having fun. I came over a site on tarot cards and I was curious what the cards would tell my about my life. The site asked me if I have a question in mind. Considering my present situation, I typed the question: "Will I be successful in my career?" Obviously, I am suffering from self-pity and lack of self esteem as of the moment and am therefore questioning my capabilities. The next step that I chose was the kind of spread for my tarot cards. I chose the 6-card spread. I was then made to "electronically" shuffle the cards and then after shuffling the cards, I chose my 6 random cards. My choice revealed the following six cards: Card No. 1: 5 of Wands, inverted. Card No. 1 is also called as the Querent position. This means, the card on this position tells about the person asking the question. "The position gives insight into current circum...
