Youtube Highlights of 2013

Image
In less than 2 days now, we will say goodbye to the current year and welcome 2014 with a bang. 2013 has been another memorable year: with many unforgettable moments from the worst to the best. Many of these memories have been captured and uploaded in Youtube. Each one may have his or her own list of favorite and memorable Youtube videos for 2013. Here's mine:      The historic win of the Philippine National Basketball team over South Korea during the FIBA Asia Championships earned for them a ticket to the World Championships which will be held in Spain this 2014. The Philippines won a Silver Medal for FIBA Asia 2013.       For Miley Cyrus, 2013 is a year of reinventing herself. When she made the talked-about "twerking" and released her racy Wrecking Ball music video, many came out with their own spoof of the the-baby-is-now-a-lady Miley Cyrus MTV. The most popular spoof is the notorious Steve Kardynal's version. ...

Tips for First-Timers: Traveling Abroad

Image
So you are traveling abroad...for the first time. Traveling outside of your own country can be very "scary" at first especially if it's your first time to do so. Even scarier if you will be doing it on your own. However, the experience can be memorable if you know how and what to prepare before your travel. You can have a variety of reasons for traveling abroad: vacation, work, conference or a mix of everything. Here are some personal tips that I can give you based on my own experience.     Tip No. 1: Plan out your itinerary weeks before your intended travel . Booking your flights is now easier since almost everything went online. You can book your flight, hotel or even rent a car on the internet. It is now even cheaper to do online booking rather than getting help from a travel agency. What's great about online booking is that you can have a variety of choices and you can compare prices without even have to move around.      Make sure ...

Living Aboard A Giant Cruise Ship: Voyager of the Seas

Image
There was a time when I lived aboard a ship, waking up everyday in a different place, eating for free and just walking to work a few decks above me. When I was working as a Medi-spa physician aboard Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, I became exposed to the ship life, experiencing the life of a seaman working far from home, away from family, traveling the world for free.     I remember the very first day I arrived in Galveston, Texas where the ship used to dock. I didn't know what to expect. Finding my own cabin was difficult enough, trying to navigate the maze-like deck for the crew. Because I came a week earlier than they expected, there was no available cabin for me yet so I had to spend 2 weeks in a guest cabin instead.     It was difficult at first, trying to adjust to this new home. After 4 weeks, I was able to get the hang of it. I have my own favorite spots on the ship. Of course, as a medi-spa physician, I could eat in the W...

Cinemedicine 2013: Medicine In The Movies

Image
In keeping up with my personal tradition, I am now launching the Cinemedicine 2014. Cinemedicine is a collection of amateur films produced by medical students of the University of Saint La Salle College of Medicine under my Family and Community Medicine class. This is actually an offshoot of the tradition I also started with my pre-med students (Cinemanatomy).      The rules and criteria for the Cinemedicine 2014 have already been posted: 1. Each group must portray the impact of a specific illness or medical condition in a story. The group must show the impact of the illness or medical condition not only to the patient but to his/her immediate family. 2. The movie must run for 10 minutes only, excluding opening and closing credits. One point will be deducted for every 30-second excess.  3. The group can use any language for as long as the movie must be subtitled in English. Failure to include subtitles in English would incur a 5-point...

Riding the Movies: Universal Studios Singapore

Image
One of the more popular places to visit in Singapore is Universal Studios in Sentosa Island. Sentosa island is really just a huge playground. You will not only find Universal Studios but other recreational parks as well. It would take you more than a day to visit all of the parks on Sentosa island. Nonetheless, if you only have a day, and you are into thrilling rides, then Universal Studios Singapore is for you. I have visited Universal Studios twice and the second time was more fun because unlike the first, I wasn't alone. Going to Universal Studios is easy. If you take the SMRT (Singapore Mass Rapid Transit), then you would need to go to Harbourfront Station. Depending, where you are coming from, it will probably just cost you 1.8 to 2 S$. Harbourfront Station is actually an interchange between the Yellow and Purple Lines (Circle Line and North East Line). The station ends up below Vivo City Mall. From the MRT, find your way up to Level 3 of Vivo City Mall where you will ...
