Inequities In The Health System

I found myself in yet another familiar territory this morning when I came back to the University of Saint La Salle in the College of Medicine to give my lecture on Public Health (First year students) and Implementing Health Programs (Third Year students). While the topics were all about the history of public health and how to implement health programs, I could not help but also highlight the inequities in health. Discussing the health inequities can be lengthy and for non-health professionals it can even be confusing. So here are I feel three videos that I would like to share that would highlight, first and foremost, the local health system, then the social determinants and finally what we can do to address inequities in health. A Local Health System simplified Social Determinants Zuellig Family Foundation's Framework and Health Change Model What do you think brings about health inequities? What can you do to address these health inequities? Like it? Share it....

The Breasts And The Monster Bill

Image
There is a pending bill in the Philippine congress attempting "to make noncompensable the time a mother breastfeeds her baby in the workplace during work hours." Dubbed by critics as the "Monster Bill" or "Anti-Breastfeeding Bill", critics see this as an attack against the Milk Code of the Philippines. Below is a copy of this draft: Draft HB - An Act Promoting a Comprehensive Program on Breasfeeding Practices and Regulating the Trade, Mar... What do you think about this bill? Awesome Philippines

Image
Since the Philippine Department of Tourism launched its campaign, many Filipinos have been supporting the "Its More Fun In The Philippines" slogan. Commercials, whether print or otherwise, have been using this catchy phrase to promote the country's drive to attract tourists both here and abroad. I have seen many videos from the DOT and so far, this video here is perhaps one of my favorites. So what's more fun in the Philippines? Here's a video that basically summarizes everything. By the way, I love the music in this video. It is definitely so Filipino. And here's a video of the Philippines through the eyes of a foreigner Like it? Share it. Fontana Equals 'Fun'tana

Image
The last day of Summer, which was actually the first day of the rainy season, became the last opportunity for my office-mates to go to a Water Park, forget about work and just spend the day bonding and enjoying ourselves. So, last June 1 we all went to Fontana Water Park in Clark, Pampanga as part of our staff recreational program. It has been a while since I came to Fontana. The first time I was there, I was with fellow doctors to the barrios also enjoying a weekend of fun and sun devoid of stress and worries about work. Fontana Hot Springs Leisure Park is located along C.M. Recto Highway at the Clark Free Zone in Pampanga, almost a 2-3 hour drive from Manila depending on traffic conditions. You can check in in one of their villas or in their hotel. Checking in a villa is almost like having your own house in a subdivision where a huge water park is located. Depending on the distance, you can either walk from your villa to the water park or to the sports center or call for a fre...

The Heroes And Villains Of Public Health

Image
While preparing for my first lecture for the first year medical students, I have decided to feature some of the "heroes" and maybe even "villains" throughout the history of Public Health. Being a history buff myself, I feel that learning the history of how Public Health developed is important in the understanding of the current status of our modern-day public health. Hippocrates - also considered as the Father of Medicine, can also be considered as the Father of Public Health. According to historians, Hippocrates was born in the island of Kos in Greece sometime in 460 BC. Hippocrates taught and practiced medicine throughout his life, traveling at least as far as Thessaly, Thrace, and the Sea of Marmara.[12] Several different accounts of his death exist. He probably died in Larissa at the age of 83, 85 or 90, though some say he lived to be well over 100. Hippocrates is credited with being the first person to believe that diseases were caused naturally, not becau...

Happy Independence Day

Image
Today we celebrate the 114th Independence Day of the Philippines. 114 years ago, General Emilio Aguinaldo hoisted the Philippine flag over the balcony of his home in Cavite and the Marcha Nacional was played by the local band. 114 years later, The Philippines is still enjoying its hard-earned freedom but have yet to fully enjoy the fruits of democracy such as economic progress and political stability. There are many ways of celebrating it. What we did was to paint our face with the colors of the Philippine flag. The Philippine flag by the way is the only flag in the world that can denote whether the country is at war or at peace. Happy Independence Day! Like it? Share it. The Girl Who Saved The Philippine Flag

Image
It was the 26th of July 2011 when Typhoon Juaning slammed Bicol and poured heavy amounts of rain. The town of Malinao in Albay experienced one of the worst flash floods in their history. The waters were rising fast. During that day, Janela and her elder brother Edcel were helping relatives living in another house evacuate their place. The waters were as high as their chests but they just could not leave their relatives helpless in the flood. All of a sudden, Edcel, a Citizen's Army Training color officer of their school, remembered something. Nope, not their TV or their appliances. Not even his books or other stuff. He remembered that he left the school's Philippine flag in their home. Being the color officer, it was his responsibility to keep the Philippine flag safe and secure. As CAT officer, he could not bear to lose the flag in the raging flood waters. However, he could not also bear to leave his relatives alone. He could not just be in two places at once. Perhaps it w...

Best Marriage Proposals

Image
For some, June is not just the start of the rainy season and school season (for the Philippines), it is also the wedding season. "June Brides" are those women who got married in June. I am not sure how this preference for June started. My only guess is since June is a month named after the goddess Juno (Hera for Greek) who is the wife of Jupiter (Zeus) and is also the goddess of marriage and family. But before any wedding can happen, a marriage proposal has to take place first. Scouring the world wide web, here is a collection of outrageous and elaborate wedding proposal some guys out there might want to consider. Top 1 Top 2 Top 3 Top 4 Top 5 Like it? Share it. Things A First Year Medical Student Must Know

Image
There are some things a frosh student in medical school must know. 1. Starting now, you will carry more books in your life than any other. You might want to start investing on ebooks and e-readers if you want to spare your back and arms. 2. Your new friends will be Gray, Robbins, Guyton, Schwartz, Nelson and Harper. You will refer to them as if they are your best friends. You don't know them personally but you will be spending your time more with them than even yourself. 3. Your class can be crowded considering the number of enrolled students for the first year. Don't worry, half of that will be gone by next year, if not next semester. 4. You will start meeting new friends but most likely will huddle with those whom you share a pre-med course with. Birds of the same BS degrees, well...you get the picture. 5. You will meet all kinds of professors, from the most benign to the most carnivorous. You can't choose your professors in the same way you can't choose yo...
