Lakbay Aral: Part 4

Image
While In Finland, the guys and I planned to celebrate Philippine Independence Day weekend in Helsinki only to find out that June 12 is also Helsinki Day. And the Finns in Helsinki have a 'peculiar' way of celebrating Helsinki Day. They do it dancing the Samba. We felt disoriented at first. Here we were in a Scandinavian country but the sounds and colors felt more like we were in Brazil.     This is part four of my video-journal of my first trip to Europe together with 3 other Filipino doctors taking Global Health at the University of Tampere. Lakbay Aral: Part 3

Image
After another week of studying, we were able to find another free weekend to spend in Helsinki. We took the train from Tampere to Helsinki for the first time. A classmate of ours from the course offered his flat for the night where we could stay for free. After finding our way to his flat and getting some quick rest, we then ventured out into the streets of Helsinki to see the sights.      We visited Helsinki on the 12th of June which is not only Philippine Independence Day but also Helsinki Day. We knew while we were on the streets something big was brewing somewhere in the heart of Helsinki. We went around to find out. Like it? Share it. Lakbay Aral Part 2

Image
So, after a few days of studying and learning about other cultures through the introductory sessions of our Global Health Course, we finally had a free weekend. We decided to explore the backyard of Tampere, again letting the road lead us to wherever. We even found a nice garden where we could just sit down and simply sit still. Tampere is beautiful. I can live there and grow old.     This part features also our visit to a Finnish Red Cross facility and a bus ride back to our flat. Like it? Share it. Lakbay Aral: Part 1

Finally, I was able to find time to edit the videos I took while I was in a study tour in Finland. I wasn't alone though. I was with 3 other Filipino doctors who come from different backgrounds but with similar inclination for public health. I am now going to feature these video clips in a so-called documentary entitled "Lakbay Aral" or Learning Journey. The docu features not only the sights and sounds of Finland and other Scandinavian countries we visited but will also give you a glimpse of the life of an international student and some perspectives about health, politics and even life in general.    This part features the first few days of our experience in Finland, from the day we arrived at the airport trying to figure out how to get to Tampere from Helsinki airport to meeting our classmates at the University and enjoying some light moments with our new friends from other parts of the world.      The results are finally in. This year, 6 entries from the current batch of first year medical students have participated in the Cinemedicine 2014. Around 3,500 votes were made via online, which makes Cinemedicine 2013 still with the highest number of votes made during their own online poll (more than 9,000 votes!).      Five judges scored the videos according to the criteria. Their average scores were taken and then we all waited for the final results of the online poll to add the remaining points. After the poll closed, the entries were ranked according to the number of votes gained. Equivalent points were given according to their ranking.      Here is the result of the online poll: It is clear that the people's choice according to the poll is "Nikita".       Adding the equivalent points from the polls, the following are the final results of this year's Cinemedicine 2014: ...
