Plans for April 2009

March is about to end and as early as now, I am already looking forward to April. March is a hectic month and although we did not have any big advocacy activity like what we had during the heart month (February), it is nonetheless a productive month. The big focus for March is actually the promotion of our Newborn Screening Program. Last February 25, 2009, we officially received our first set of Newborn Screening kits and we were able to send our first samples during the same week. I was worried at first considering that the Newborn Screening Program is dependent on the patient's capacity to pay the 600 pesos for the filter cards and since most of the people in Candoni are poor, I was not sure if the program would move forward. So, the strategy was really to enforce among the midwives the importance of Newborn Screening. Everyone believed in the program, thus it was easy to "sell" the program to the community because the promoters themselves believe in the program.

Implementing strategies to encourage pregnant mothers to save for the day that they would deliver were implemented. Part of the pre-natal health promotion was the giving of advice on how to save money for the newborn screening and for other incidental expenses such as baby diapers, sterile gauze, Vit. K ampule, etc.

So, out of 25 filter cards initially bought, around 6 are left as of yesterday. Also, last Friday, we were able to make our second purchase (an additional 10 filter cards) of kits, including posters and IEC materials to be distributed to the 9 barangay health stations. So far, Newborn Screening has increased from a meager 14% of 2007 to already around 50% as of yesterday. And this is just the first quarter of the year.

March has been filled with meetings especially about the Rationalization Plan of the Province of Negros Occidental. Two weeks have been spent for doctors and nurses and administrators to meet and plan out and analyze the health needs of the province in order to come up with a rationalization plan. For Candoni, I was able to include our plan of upgrading the Main health Center to a Level I primary hospital. Prior to the Rationalization Plan, we have already made plans to apply for a license to operate as an Infirmary. However, due to this Rationalization Plan, we have to suspend our plan and wait for the accomplishment of the Rat Plan.

One big accomplishment for March was our official accreditation by Philhealth for our two components: Outpatient Benefit Package and TB DOTS.

So for April, our plan is to catch up for the Maternity Care Package Accreditation. At the same time, plans in preparation for the Garantisadong Pambata on April 13 are being made. We are planning to launch GP Round 1 with the usual activities conducted last year. April will also be a month of aggresive campaign against "Summer Diseases". Of course, our Healthy Lifestyle program is year-round. We have also scheduled a bloodletting activity on April 2nd. We have in fact participated in the Sandugo Awards for 2008. We have already submitted our documents.

Big events for April is of course the Annual Convention of the Association Of Municipal Health Officers of the Philippines in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. I have already made arrangements.

So, hopefully, we can accomplish more things in April.
