The Filipino Is Worth Dying For
In tribute to the death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino, here's a video taken from the funeral of his own wife, the late President Corazon "Cory" Aquino. Leah Salonga's rendition of "Bayan Ko" (My Country) is not only moving but almost reminiscent of the sentiment that was dominant during the early 1980's.

The song "Bayan Ko" became an athem for Filipinos fighting for their democracy during the dying years of Marcos' martial law. The People Power Revolution of 1986, while not currently highlighted and remembered by Western Media and literature, was the first of its kind. Western Media and historians would highlight only the Massacre of Tiannanmen Square in China or the Fall of the Berlin Wall as the highlights of the 1980's. They seemed to be conveniently failing to recall the revolution that started the rest of the revolutions during that decade.
May we never forget the lessons of People Power 1986.
