The Crucible of P-noy: Major Major

Image
It was President Noynoy's first test and I had to say, he failed miserably. The Manila Hostage which rocked not just the entire country but the entire world who witnessed it brought so much shame to all Filipinos. While it was an isolated case and hostage-taking in reality is not rampant in the country, it still tarnished our image in the international community. Filipinos after all are famous for being overly (if not major major) hospitable to tourists especially from foreign countries. That is why many foreigners would come to the Philippines because of our warmth and hospitable nature. But the Manila Hostage Taking definitely created a different image of Filipinos. For one, the world has now discovered that Filipinos don't know how to smash a bus door with a sledge hammer. But it is more than just the poor tactical operations and the lack of resources and the unchecked media that brought down the Filipino image to one of its lowest so far. The big question was, "Where w...

The Extremes of The Philippines

Image
Within the span of 24 hours, we saw two sides, both at the very extreme ends, of the Philippines. We saw how a hostage taking in Manila became a national shame and we witnessed how a beauty pageant in Las Vegas became almost a national pride. Both stories have so many "what ifs" but they practically speak of two sides of the country, if not of its people. The hostage taking of a disgruntled former policeman was witnessed by the entire world, thanks to the indiscriminate aiming of the media's lenses. It started quite well, with 9 hostages released unharm and the rest of the day almost uneventful. Then the cover of night made things turn for the worse. The downpour of heavy rain added to the drama like it was a scene from a familiar Hollywood movie. But in this case, real bullets, real blood, real lives were before us. I would not even dare analyze how I think the situation was made worse. I leave that to the experts in such matters. What I feel though is that this could ha...

"Thank You Lord": Celebrating 3 Years of Being A Licensed Physician

We never thought we could make it, but despite the odds, all we did was to do our best and to believe in ourselves. It has been 3 years since we became doctors. Three years later, we are keeping the flame of faith alive. To my fellow Lasallian Doctors of Class 2006, the Pioneer Batch of the University of Saint La Salle College of Medicine, Congratulations. What Is A Doctor To The Barrios?

A few days ago, I was invited by my alma mater to give a Career Talk. After some reflection, I ended up making this slide which I presented to the high school kids. What Is A Doctor To The Barrios My stint as a Doctor to the Barrios has ended, and right now I am in a transition. This hiatus is allowing me to make another important decision in life. Here I am between the door of Janus himself, with my legs straddling the threshold. Whatever choice I will make, I am grateful for the DTTB experience. It has made me a much better doctor I think. I will never forget the people, places and events in my life as a DTTB. It is true what they say, "Once a DTTB, always a DTTB". Like it? Share it. The Big Difference

Image
I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor. The doctor is after all perceived as somebody smart, an expert in the field of medicine, a successful professional whose noble duty makes him separate from the crowd. He is the guy in immaculate white coat, strolling along the halls of the hospital, where he finds out what makes people sick and tells them the solution to their sickness. His every word is gospel truth for he is seen by his patients as somebody who knows everything. Of course, a doctor is expected to know a lot of things. After all, he has spent at least 10 years of his life reading column after column of books, not to mention consulting patients day in and day out. Of course he must learn how to diagnose and apply the appropriate treatment. That is why people seek the doctor's presence: to be cured of their illness. In the old English language, a Doctor means somebody who is "learned" or "smart", a "teacher", an intelligent almost philosopher-...
