Perception on Premarital Sex of Youth Participants in the First Candoni Summer Youth Camp
During the Summer youth camp held last May 21, 2009, I conducted a survey regarding perceptions about premarital sex among the youth participants. We handed out survey forms and after checking out the validity of their answers, I consolidated the results. Around 90 participants answered the survey however only 75 forms were found to be answered completely. Forms which were not answered completely were not included in the tabulation.
Based on the results, of the 75 valid answers, 47% were males and 53% were females. Average age is about 16-17 years old. 97.3% of respondents considered themselves straight. All participants were single. 85.3% were Catholics, 5.3% were Protestants and 5.3% belong to other religions. 50.7% of the respondents were college students, 48% were high school students and the rest were elementary students.
Question No. 1: I already experienced having sex.
12% of the respondents said YES and 88% of the respondents said NO. Among those who answered YES, 55.6% said that one of their reasons why they had sex was to prove something to themselves or to their friends. 44.4% of them said that one of their reasons why they had sex was to experiment. The same percentage also said that one of their reasons was due to out of curiosity and for pleasure. 33.3% of those who said YES said that one of the reasons why they had sex was due to peer pressure. The same percentage also considered love as reason for having had sex. Only 11.1% said that wanting to be "in" was one reason why they had sex. None of them said that rebelling against parents was a reason for having had sex.
Those who said NO, 37.9% said that one of their reasons why they never had sex was because they wanted to preserve their dignity. 33.3% of them said that they never had sex because they considered it as wrong or sinful. 28.8% of them said that they were not ready yet. 27.3% said they were afraid of getting pregnant or their girlfriends getting pregnant. 12.1% never had sex because they were afraid of getting caught by their parents and only 7.6% were afraid of getting Sexually Transmitted Diseases or HIV.
Question No. 2: I have experienced pressure from friends to have sex.
66.7% of all respondents said they experienced no pressure from friends to engage into sex. This is validated by the answers of respondents who engaged into premarital sex. Peer pressure is not the top reason why these teens engaged into sex.
18.7% of the respondents said they experienced little pressure from friends. The rest experienced either moderate to lots of pressure from friends.
Question No. 3: I have experienced support from friends not to have sex.
37.3% said that they experienced lots of support from peers not to engage into sex. 28% said they experienced no support at all. The rest said that they only experienced little to moderate support.
Question No. 4: I believe that most of my friends are engaging into premarital sex.
54.7% of all respondents said NO while 45.3% of all respondents said YES.
Question No. 5: I believe that most of my friends use contraception of any kind.
60% of all respondents said NO while 40% of all respondents said YES.
