Happy Place

Image
After a hectic week, I find myself dreaming of my happy place, where I can find rest and relaxation, where stress is not existent and all desires are reachable and available in an instant. The first week of March will be "back-to-normal" week for me, although it may not be entirely stress-free. There is still more work to be done, with so little time left. If you ask me today, if I would continue my work as a doctor to the barrio in my present area of assignment, I might answer you, "No". I know that there are still a lot of things to do for my area, and they may not be completed within the short 2 years. However, I have place certain conditions that would make me stay at least for the next 6 months after the end of my contract. So far, I have yet to see those conditions accomplished. On the more personal side, I have to consider the financial stability of my own self and family. The choices I will have to make shall shape the kind of future that I will choose for m...

Final Days of February

Image
After the Fiesta in Candoni, things are yet to settle, especially for us health workers. The week following the Fiesta week, the Rural health unit of Candoni started conducting its Afternoon Aerobics Exercise (HATAW) at the Public Plaza. Every 4:30 in the afternoon, municipal employees, students, and by-standers would join the health workers do the Hataw using original steps made by our HL team. Yesterday afternoon, I was able to join the Hataw together with the Mayor himself, Mayor Cicero Borromeo. Earlier that afternoon, the Mayor and I talked at the Mayor's Office and I shared with him the good news regarding our facility now accredited as a Newborn Screening facility. He was sharing his plans for 2009 with me and how delighted he was to see the progress that is happening in Candoni. Candoni really started from zero and now, the municipality has a new Main health center which has a 10-bed Observation Ward, OPD, Emergency Room and trauma Care, 2-bed Labor room and Sterile Deliver...

Newborn Screening Facility

Image
For the first time once again, the Rural health Unit of Candoni became an accredited Newborn Screening Facility today. The mail came last Friday and this morning, I went to Iloilo to, firstly, attend the launching of the Center for Health Development Western Visayas HL 2 D Max at the Iloilo Sports Complex and secondly, to get our 25 filter cards for NBS at the West Visayas State University Medical Center Newborn Screening Center. A month ago, I went to the same facility to follow up our request to be accredited as a Newborn Screening facility which I initially sent to the Regional Office at the desk of the Regional Newborn Screening Coordinator last November 2008. I was informed that our facility was yet to receive its facility code number which meant, the Regional NBS coordinator failed to process our application. Luckily, I brought extra copies of our application forms and duly signed Purchase Order. Immediately, the NBS center staff sent a fax to their central office in Manila. Less...

Thirteen-Year Old Kid Becomes A Dad

Image
Here's an interesting news: "Alfie Patten was present four days ago when his girlfriend Chantelle Steadman, 15, gave birth to Maisie Roxanne in Eastbourne Hospital, East Sussex, UK tabloid The Sun reports. “I thought it would be good to have a baby," Alfie told The Sun. “I didn’t think about how we would afford it. I don’t really get pocket money. My dad sometimes gives me £10 ($21).” Alfie, who lives with with his mum, admitted he did not know how much nappies cost: “I think it’s a lot.” Alfie, who was 12 when Maisie was conceived, and Chantelle decided not to have an abortion and had kwpt the pregnancy secret until at 18 weeks Chantelle's mum noticed the weight gain. “When my mum found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble," Alfie said. "We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react “I didn’t know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good, though, and care for it.” Alfie’s father Dennis, who isseparated from the family, ...

Go Kiss And Be Free of Stress

Image
Something I read from yahoo.com this Valentine's Day. " "Chemistry look what you've done to me," Donna Summer crooned in Science of Love, and so, it seems, she was right. Just in time for Valentine's Day, a panel of scientists examined the mystery of what happens when hearts throb and lips lock. Kissing, it turns out, unleashes chemicals that ease stress hormones in both sexes and encourage bonding in men, though not so much in women. Chemicals in the saliva may be a way to assess a mate, Wendy Hill, dean of the faculty and a professor of neuroscience at Lafayette College, told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Friday. In an experiment, Hill explained, pairs of heterosexual college students who kissed for 15 minutes while listening to music experienced significant changes in their levels of the chemicals oxytocin, which affects pair bonding, and cortisol, which is associated with stress. Their blood and saliva levels of ...

Candoni's Fiesta

Image
The last 3 days were days of revelry in Candoni, as they commemorate their 48th town patronal festival in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. I was personally excited to be there in the fiesta considering that last year, the barangay captains decided to forego with the Streetdancing Competition (formerly known as Pabalhas sa Tablas). This year, the Mayor insisted of re-including the Streetdancing Contest but this time under a new name: Dinagyaw sa Tablas. Dinagyaw has been commonly used the last few months especially under this present administration of Mayor Borromeo. Dinagyaw invokes a sense of "bayanihan", or community spirit. In fact, the history of Candoni, which was then formerly known as Tabla Valley Settlement, is rich with episodes of Dinagyaw. When the early settlers decided to build 30 kilometers of roads from the Tabla Valley to Dancalan, Ilog, without the support of government, it was perhaps unparalleled in the history of the Philippines, to quote former President Man...
