The Opportunity To Prove Them Wrong
To my friends and batchmates who will take the upcoming medical board exams This February 10 and 11, 2008, bear in mind that my family and I are with you in our prayers.
It is yet another defining moment for all of you; another opportunity to prove yourselves has arrived. This opportunity must be regarded as God-given. For when we ask for patience, doesn't He provide us with opportunities to be patient? For when we ask for courage, doesn't He provide us with opportunities to be brave? For He is a God who gives graces through opportunities. Now, in answer to your prayers of becoming a full-pledge doctor, He has given you once again another opportunity to be so.
For some of you, this is the first time you will take the board exams and the fear of the unknown is seemingly incurable. I remember the instance when I felt pessimistic about the outcome of my exams even days before I was about to take them. I never expected to survive the ordeal. I could barely survive my self-doubt. To say therefore that there is nothing to fear is undermining your human sentiment of fear, of anxiety, all of which can be normal and expected. After all, all that is flesh shiver when fever descends.
For some of you, this is already the second time you will hurdle the board exams, and the fear of failing it again is unfathomable. I can only imagine the pressure that pushes over your stressed out spirits. The memory of a tragic past seems to chain itself around your ankles. The long walk back to where you started can be draining. After all, all that is scarred find healing as time-consuming.
Nevertheless, for those who are to take this for the first time, let not that fear take hold over you. While it is natural to be afraid, it is extraordinary to be brave. The cure for fear is faith and to believe that you can make it is one struggle already won. Your being there now, with your heads buried in your books, and eyes retained open to absorb all that can be absorb from your notes, that alone is a testament to a fighting spirit that dwells within. You can make it. All you need is to believe.
For my friends who are to take this for the second time, let not that miserable yesterday dictate your tomorrow. While it is natural to look back to the past, it is extraordinary to step out of its fold and stretch out into the future. The cure for misery is hope and to rely on a bright and more favorable outcome makes you one step ahead. Let not the shadows of your failures conceal your vision of a more radiant future. The fact that you are there once again, trekking the same lonely road of uncertainty, is a testament to your unfaltering spirit, the indomitable you that resides within. You can make it. All you need is to hope.
Wherever you are in your quest for that elusive dream, bear in mind that you are never alone in your journey. Take time to seek comfort among family members and close friends. Find strength from people who love you. Do not be distracted by critics. Save your strength and spare yourself from the stress of throwing stones against the hounds that howl at you along the way. You are beautiful, no matter what they tell you.
As for me, I am proud to have friends like you, who never fail to show what true courage means. I am proud to be a colleague. I am honored to have once shared the road with you. I look forward to the day that we will once again journey together this time as medical doctors. Godspeed.
