Happy 69th Charter Day, Bacolod City, Philippines
I am a Masskara Baby. I was born on the very first Masskara 27 years ago. This year is the 28th Masskara fetival in the City of Smiles and also the 69th Charter Day of Bacolod. The Masskara fever is rising and BacoleƱos are showing the entire country how to partee.
The big party started midnight of Oct 19 when the annual countdown at the city hall was held along with spectacular fireworks. In the morning of the 19th, various activities around the city were held. In the afternoon, the annual Charter Day civic parade was held. In the evening, for the first time, the Electric Masskara was held along the long stretch of Lacson highway. The night was capped with another set of spectacular fireworks.
The 20th and the 21st will be spent for the annual Masskara parade and streetdance party. The barangay category competition is today, later at 2 pm, while the open category will be tomorrow, same time. Tonight, another set of "electric" fantasy floats will be parading along Lacson highway. Now, again, I am not liking this year's dance theme song. While I laud the effort of incorporating the folk songs in the lyrics, the rock-pop type is not really reflective of the genuine Masskara beat, which is latin. They say the festival is evolving, but I am the more conservative type when it comes to making changes in the festival. I mean, we can add on but I think we can never really change it. Masskara is a latin-beat inspired festival, an Island festival, and the music and dances must reflect it. Anyway, I will be going out in the streets later to take another set of pictures. Last night my wife and I took a stroll along Lacson Highway and met a few friends and familiar faces. It was a fun sight to see the entire highway stretch lit up with various lights and high-powered beams and alive with sounds blasting from stereos every 200 meters. It was a big party for Bacolod. Happy Charter Day Bacolodnons!
P.S. In the spirit of Masskara, I will be featuring a latin song done by Thalia in this blog. If you are reading it straight from The Freudian Slip, then you can hear the song play automatically.
