The Election Updates: Day 3 After The Voting

A few snapshots of the post-election scenario in some parts of the country.

1)'Binay made unlawful arrest' - Team Unity lashed out at re-electionist Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay Tuesday for his arrogant and “unlawful” arrest of several people whom he accused of illegal campaigning during the elections last Monday. TU’s lead counsel Romulo Macalintal said Binay violated the country’s laws when he made the apprehensions in a very ill manner. “He hurt the woman he arrested with the way he placed his arm on her shoulder. To think the woman is only an ordinary person who just happened to be wearing a Kampi shirt,” Macalintal said. (The Philippine Star)

2)Custodio widens lead vs Pacquiao - South Cotabato 1st District Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio continued to widen her lead against Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao in the congressional race, according to the latest results of the partial and unofficial tally of the National Citizen's Movement for Free Elections quickcount Wednesday. ABS-CBN correspondent Dexter Ganibe said NAMFREL's latest count showed Custodio getting 71,760 votes as opposed to Pacquiao's 41,612. The first congressional district of South Cotabato is composed of General Santos City and the municipalities of Polomolok, Tupi and Tampakan. The district has about 250,000 registered voters.(Abs-cbn News.com)

3)More cops deployed to Pasig gym - The Pasig City police force requested the neighboring Marikina police force to beef up security at the Pasig City Sports Center Wednesday as tension between supporters of mayoralty candidates Councilor Robert "Bobby" Eusebio and Pasig Rep. Robert "Dodot" Jaworski Jr. escalated. Superintendent Frank Uyami, Pasig police chief, said they asked for additional policemen to help them secure the gym where the canvassing of election returns and certificate of votes will be held. "Based on our evaluation, we need the additional personnel," Uyami told The Star, adding that they also need to make sure that peace is maintained in the city. (The Philippine Star)

4)Puentevella, Leonardia lead in Namfrel counting - INCUMBENT and re-electionist Bacolod lone district Congressman Monico Puentevella leads the race in the congressional post, while his rival's running mate, incumbent and re-electionist Mayor Evelio Leonardia posts a lead over his rivals in the mayoralty post. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday night, Nassa/Namfrel Operation Quick Count results in 640 precincts showed that Puentevella is leading with 54,705 over his rivals incumbent vice mayor and congressional candidate Renecito Novero with 53,476, and Andy Hagad with 16,058.

On a related news, Monico leads NAMFREL count, Novero ahead in Comelec tally - While Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella was leading in the National Secretariat for Social Action's "quick-count," congressional candidate Renecito Novero was leading in the COMELEC count. The result of the NASSA "quick-count" as of 9 p.m. showed Puentevella registering 54,705 votes against Novero's 53,476. The COMELEC count as of 5 p.m. yesterday showed Novero having 4,248 votes as against Puentevella's 3,061. In a press statement he issued to the DAILY STAR yesterday, Puentevella assured his supporters of a third term as he widened his lead over his rival by as much as 2,182 votes in the latest count based on Lakas-CMD's copy of the official election returns as the dominant majority party. He also paced the NASSA tally by 826 votes as of early Monday night, it said. (The Visayan Daily Star)

5)Bing a 'traitor': Baribar - On the personal note, Archie Baribar confirmed that in 2004, he was victim of political junking by the Leonardias. He said the mayor and a certain Nene met with Representative Puentevella somewhere in Sta. Clara Subdivision in Bacolod where they forged an unholy alliance for Puentevella to support Leonardia and Leonardia to support Monico. All these, Baribar said were only revealed when both Leonardia and Puentevella had a falling-out. "That's why I can say that Monico had all the reasons to call Bing an ingrate (ingrato) and my supporters have all the reasons to consider Bing a traitor," Baribar said. (SunStar Bacolod)

6)Loren regains lead in latest NAMFREL count - Genuine Opposition candidate Loren Legarda regained the lead in the latest tally of the National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections quickcount (partial and unofficial) Thursday morning. As of 5:37 a.m., Legarda was leading the count with 2,115,936 votes followed by fellow GO candidates Francis Escudero (2,082,908), Panfilo Lacson (1,942,396) and Manuel Villar (1,745,048). Independent candidate Francis Pangilinan placed fifth with 1,739,306 votes followed by GO's Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III (1,695,740), Team Unity's Edgardo Angara (1,484,162) and independent bet Gregorio Honasan (1,389,149). GO candidate Alan Peter Cayetano placed ninth with 1,373,173 votes followed by TU's Joker Arroyo (1,344,835), GO bet Antonio Trillanes IV (1,343,944) and Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III (1,316,050). NAMFREL said the latest results came from 35,839 precincts, which is only 15.95 percent of the total number of polling stations nationwide. (Abs-cbn News.com)

Last night, I received a text message from compadre Nicky Boy Puentevella, and the SMS reads, "The family of Cong. Monico would like to thak the people of Bacolod for giving him another madate to be their voice in Congress. the final tally based on the official election returns shows that Cong. Monico garnered 75798 versus that of Novero 74608 or a margin of 1,190 votes. Again we thank you for your support."

I also came from the BAY Center yesterday, site of the Canvassing of Votes of the COMELEC, and an interesting thing happened. At around 6 p.m., COMELEC issued an order that NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO GET INSIDE the canvassing area. Police secured the gates and did not allow the public to get inside the area usually assigned for interested people who would want to watch the canvassing of votes. Later, the awaiting people were told the gates would be opened at around 7 p.m. The gates were opened at around 7:20 p.m. but only those with COMELEC-issued I.D.'s were allowed to get inside. It wasn't crowded inside the canvassing area at that time and only official watchers from each political camps were present. Disgruntled, ordinary folks who wished nothing but to watch the canvassing, went home instead.

Question: Isn't it that the public should not be disallowed from watching the process of canvassing in the said canvassing area, considering that the process should be made public and transparent as possible, for as long as people who are watching should behave in proper decorum?
