The summer vacation for Filipino students has just started and there is no better way to spend the summer vacation than the beaches of the Philippines. This archipelago wonder of the Pacific has been blessed with authentic natural beauty which is the envy of many. Don't take my word for it. Historic Binondo Church

Image
When one is visiting Manila's historic Chinatown, one should not fail to visit the antique church of Binondo. Its official name is the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz. San Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino to be canonized by the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on September 28. The Binondo church was established by the Dominican friars in 1563, making it one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It was intended to serve the Chinese converts which predominated the area even until now. The church that stands today is actually not the original church since the original church that the Dominicans built was destroyed during the brief British Occupation of Manila in the 1700's and the liberation of Manila during World War II.      It was in this church that Lorenzo Ruiz, who was actually half-Chinese (Chinese Father and Filipino Mother), was baptized, married and served as altar boy before escaping out of the Philippines and int...

To The Philippine Government, From One Of Your Doctors

I decided not to pursue any more specialization because I wanted to focus on public health and community medicine. But for many of my "masochistic" batchmates, they decided another 3 or 4 years of physical and mental torture wouldn't hurt them so they went on to get specialty training as residents. That meant another round of 24-hour duties every 2-3 days in a place which can be as unforgiving as our renowned government hospitals: dilapidated and undermanned facil...

"Because No One Should Die While Giving Life...": Infographic Presentation

Image
The Zuellig Family Foundation in 2013 had partnerships, through various programs, with more than 200 local government units. Around 76 of them are directly being handled by ZFF while the rest were in partnership with the Department of Health. One of the priority areas of ZFF is to improve maternal health as measured by their health indicators such as Maternal Mortality Ratio. To highlight the findings for 2013, I made an infographic presentation (through PiktoChart.com) to highlight the major details.
