Doctor OF the Barrios

Image
( UPDATE: This article appeared in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Dec. 1, 2012. Here is the link to the online version of the commentary published by PDI. Thank you PDI for allowing my commentary to be published.) Nothing could be more memorable than the 3 years I spent working as a Doctor to the Barrios. I was assigned to the municipality of Candoni, Negros Occidental in 2007 and together with the hardworking RHU staff and barangay health workers and their barangay captains, with the support of the Mayor and the entire municipal council, reforms have been made in order to halt what appeared to be at that time an increasing trend in maternal deaths and infant deaths. While I am no longer a Doctor to the Barrio (I currently work for a big NGO based in Manila), I still feel the same admiration for current Doctors to the Barrios as well as those who came before us. In the old days, fresh-grad doctors, like I was, would volunteer to become a Doctor to the Barrio (DTTB). In my batch, ...

Prevention And Control of Diseases

Image
For a doctor, whether in public health or in private practice, the major enemy is disease and for centuries, physicians and scientists would always struggle to find ways and means on how to fight and eliminate diseases, especially those which are fatal to man and even animals and plants on which men depend for food. For a clinician, the objective is how one individual would not get sick or proceed to a more complicated case. For a public health officer, the objective is how to ensure that a community of many would not get sick (outbreak). This will be the topic of my first lecture for the 3rd year medical students this second semester. The Story of Teresa: Impact of Illness On The Patient, The Family and Society

Image
The following story is shared to me by a good friend, Dr. Ryan Guinaran. This story was originally written by Lily Anne N. Safilo, a student of Dr. Guinaran in the Community Health and Culture subject of the Master in Community Health Development Course at the Benguet State University Open University. This story is a true-to-life story and the names of the people involved were changed. TERESA is a student from Nab-ew a farming sitio of Tanaw, a remote barangay in Mt. Province. Her parents separated when she was only five years old. She is the oldest among three siblings. Since the income of her mother as a farmer was not enough for the family, Teresa helped her mother by selling “tinudok,” in school. She earned P30 per day. This amount was used to supplement their needs in elementary school. When Teresa was in high school, she was sent to stay with her aunt in Poblacion. In exchange for free board and lodging, Teresa worked after school in the karaoke bar of her aunt as waitress...

Gangnam Style In Different Styles

Image
Korean Pop star Psy's Gangnam Style is a worldwide hit, even to non-Asians. Around the world, people would do the Gangnam style dance and even do their own versions of the dance (and the song) and upload them on youtube. It was an instant hit, especially here in the Philippines. It's almost like the MC Hammer's "You can't touch this" dance step of today's generation. Scouring the youtube world with videos of Gangnam dance covers, here are some of my favorites: Like it? Share it. Get the Share on Facebook widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox !
