To See The Forest, And Not Just The Trees

I couldn't help it. I just had to buy an internet card even though the price is robbery in daylight. I just had to blog my insights for today. Plus, I needed to post a shout-out to my wife and kids back home. I do miss them. Anyway, today is Day 2 of the Health Leaders and Managers for the Poor training in Tagaytay. The entire day was really insightful. The morning started with a lecture on health inequities by Professor Garilao (former DAR secretary). It was an interesting lecture. I was able to participate during the discussion, giving my example of what I feel is an "inequity" in my health system. The example I gave was with regards to facility-based deliveries. The existing policy is to encourage mothers to have their babies delivered in a health facility, attended by skilled health workers. The objective is to reduce maternal mortality rate. While I was able to improve this health status in my community, the problem is still "unsolved" especially when it co...

Entire Week In Tagaytay

Image
It is going to be half-relaxation half-work. I will be attending the last module of my Health Leadership and Management Program training conducted and sponsored by Zuellig Foundation. The training will be spent in Phinma Training Center in Tagaytay. This will be my second time in Tagaytay. I have learned a lot from my Module 1: Actualizing Potentials which was held in Bohol last year. I heard we will be the last batch of HLMP trainees. I will be travelling to Manila early tomorrow morning and my dilemma now is where to spend my remaining 6-7 hours before I travel to Makati where the assembly point will be (Philamlife Tower Lobby). My flight will be arriving at around 8 a.m. and since SM MOA won't be open until 10 am I am trying to find a place where I can wait for the next two hours before I transfer to MOA where I can have my lunch before I head to Makati. The next problem will be on Friday when the training ends. The bus will leave from Tagaytay to Manila at around 6 pm and I sch...

Red Cross Day

Image
This morning, another milestone has been added to the long history of Candoni. For the first time, the Red Cross Organization conducted the bloodletting activity at the Municipal Health Office. Last year, we had 5 bloodletting activities all conducted by the Provincial Health Office in coordination with CLMMRH. This year, we invited the Red Cross to conduct one of our bloodletting activities. The team of Red Cross volunteers arrived yesterday evening and were accommodated at the Tourist Cottage. The morning started quite early, with the staff already arranging the place in preparation for the bloodletting activity. The Red Cross team had their breakfast at the conference room at the Main Health Center. By 9 am, donors from various parts of the municipality started to trickle in. At first, we were not sure whether many would be coming to donate. But by 9:30 a.m., around 60-70 people were already lining up outside. At around 10:30 a.m., college students literally "paraded" from...

Advocating For The Children

Image
This morning, the ECCD team of the municipality went to Brgy. Gatuslao, a far-flung barangay of the municipality of Candoni, to conduct advocacy classes regarding early childhood care and development (ECCD). Participants of the ECCD advocacy class were purok presidents of various puroks and sitios of the barangay, including the barangay officials. Members of the ECCD team include the MSWD, DILG, MNAO and other department heads of the municipality. During my time to speak, I shared to them the many programs of the government which address the various health concerns of both the children and the parents particularly the mother. "But, these programs will not be successful if the community will not support them," I told them. I told them that the local government is doing its best to bring the programs closer to the front lines. It is up to the community to embrace it as their own and support it. My analogy was, " Daw parehus man na bala sang lamesa nga puno sang pagkaon. Na...

A Day In The Life Of A DTTB

Image
My typical day begins at around 7 am. As soon as I wake up, I would usually turn on my laptop and perform my daily ritual: listening to my iTunes music. A good 30-minute meditation, practically just lying in bed and listening to good Christian songs or slow songs would be enough. I would then take a bath and change into my clothes. Usually it would only take me around 20 minutes. The remaining 10 minutes before 8 would be spent on my breakfast. Breakfast would either be a hot oatmeal or hot chocolate drink. At exactly 8 am I would step out of the quarters and greet everyone who is already in a "Good morning", hopping from one office to the other, starting from the Public Health Office up to the Lab. If there are patients admitted the night before, I would immediately perform my rounds. There was one time that I had 3 patients lying in my observation ward. 1 was a post-partum patient, another was a hypertensive patient who just wanted to take a rest and another was a case of m...

You're The 1, Goldilocks

Image
If someone would ask me about my childhood and the things that I could remember, among those which I could never forget are the images of my favorite Childhood dessert. In the late 1980's and even early 1990's, Goldilocks had not yet established a single outlet in Bacolod. Thus, when my mother brought home a box of polvoron wrapped in that recognizable golden yellow wrappers from one of her trips in Manila, it was at an instant a curious sight. Of course, any pasalubong would delight any child but of the many pasalubongs brought home by my mother, this one caught my attention. Sure, I still would love to receive a toy or a nice coloring book and I would squeal with anticipation whenever I would find a box of chocolates along with other pasalubongs. But ever since that first encounter, I would always expect a box or two of Goldilocks polvoron from my mother or father whenever they would come home from one of their out-of-town trips. The taste of Goldilocks' polvoron was u...
