18-year old G3P2 mother

Image
She wasn't the only kind of patient I would encounter in my clinics. This 18-year old pregnant girl went to the main health center yesterday to have her first ever pre-natal check up...for her third pregnancy! Her previous two pregnancies were delivered by a traditional birth attendant at home and she never had any history of prenatal check up. Her visit yesterday to my health center was her second prenatal visit already. When one of my midwives heard that there was this 18-year old girl who is pregnant and never had any prenatal check ups in her life, she immediately advised the girl to proceed to the main health center and start her prenatal check up. Her expected date is already this June 13, 2009. She is one of many in the countryside who get pregnant early either by choice or by "accident". She first got pregnant at the age of 15 years old. She is no longer studying and her supposed "husband" is in Bacolod working. According to her, her "husband" ...

It Can Wait Module

The youth camp was just an activity. We are planning to follow it up with some monitoring of its "effects". The favorable outcome should be a reduction of teenage pregnancies in the municipality. Tracking our pregnant women in the area are easy. Our barangay health workers and barangay midwives act as our frontliners. Hopefully, the teens of Candoni will realize that premarital sex is not only a risky behavior. It is not really worth it. The emotional attachment and the possible risk of getting pregnant can all be distressing to a young person. One of the plans is to convene a small core group of participants during the camp and to ask them what happened to their pledge and what they have done to spread the word a few months after the camp. Virus Awareness

The Philippines is no longer Swine Flu free. So far, the country has 29 confirmed cases of Mexican Swine Flu. It was expected already. It was just a matter of time. The Philippines is a country of migrants and of course foreigners come and go as well. OFW's coming home from other countries and foreigners visiting the country because of work or for pleasure are possible carriers of this virus. It is not as deadly as the common flu so far but it can become another potential lethal virus. My concern as a health officer is that this virus can find its way in my area of responsibility. I have constituents who are also travelling in and out of our municipality. They might get the virus from other carriers and bring them back to Candoni. The thing is, this Swine Flu has manifestations that are just similar to any common flu. How can we detect it at our level now? It is still important to do preventive medicine therefore. Handwashing is still very effective. Besides, there is still another...

Those Cebu inmates did it again. I would have liked it if they used the Pussycat Doll version of the song. The beat was faster and the visual could have been better but this one is still outstanding. Mabuhay ka, Bilanggong Pilipino! (naks) Post Classified Ads That Produce Results

A Much Needed Break

We never had a family vacation for the last...hmmm, 28 years? So, when we decided to hit the beach last weekend, we could not let this opportunity pass us by. It was the only time I could pull out my parents from their "busy work" and since I was able to save some money, we decided to bring them to Boracay. It was my fourth personal visit to this famous island and it was their first time ever. Never mind that it was the start of the rainy season. The accommodations are cheap and the beach was not that crowded. So, we had fun at the beach. We went island hopping and snorkelling. We had fun on the banana boat ride. My daughter was enjoying her special treatment on a speedboat. I wanted to parasail but my pockets were not deep enough. It was a relaxing moment. No thought of work. No thought of stress. The waves were huge and it was my first time to see Boracay's waters come to life. The last time I was here was April of 2008 and the waters were still and quiet. Due to the mo...
