A Very Long Absence

Image
After a week of silence, I am back to blogging, which actually means I am now at home in Bacolod, enjoying the "abundant" supply of internet connection. 2 hours ago, I just arrived from Manila, fresh from the 34th CME of the Doctors to the Barrios held at Hotel Kimberly, Tagaytay. It was another encounter with friends and colleagues who share the same set of experiences, same set of ideals and same intensity of enthusiasm to serve as a DTTB. It was a long bus ride from the hotel to Magallenes, where a few of us were dropped off to catch a cab and head for the airport. I was very excited to go home. I missed my kids and I needed a good "home rest". A few minutes after I arrived home and was able to settle down quite a bit, I somehow had this feeling of still wanting to be with my fellow DTTBs. Spending time with them allows me to recharge my idealism and enthusiasm. But, we can't spend time just for CME's. We have to go back to the real world, where we can te...

Batch 23 At The 34th CME DTTB

Image
Snapshots of Batch 23 of the Doctors to the Barrios during our CME here in Hotel Kimberly in Tagaytay: It is quite a stormy day here in Tagaytay. According to reports, a tropical storm is hitting Luzon as of the moment, thus, it is raining hard outside of the hotel. Occasionally, a thick layer of fog would creep over the hotel area. It is chilly here in the highlands but the 4th day of CME is way better than the previous days. The workshop conducted to us was so far the most productive and interactive part of this 34th CME. 34th CME Doctors to the Barrio: Ongoing

Image
It is now the third day of the 34th CME of the Doctors to the Barrios and the CME is being held here in Hotel Kimberly, Tagaytay. Perhaps it is a perfect getaway for these tired DTTB's, many of whom have been deployed in the most merciless areas of the country. So, last Monday, I woke up early and headed to the airport where I took the first flight out to Manila. In the same flight was Doctor Jesena, a pediatrician and former professor in the College of Medicine. We talked about a lot of stuff and somehow, my conversation with the good doctor has also helped me think of my plans after DTTB. My stint as a DTTB will end after 6 months, which means, I will be unemployed by the end of October. I arrived in Manila at around 8 a.m. and headed immediately to the Central Office in Tayuman, where the rest of the DTTB's were waiting with the bus which would bring us to Tagaytay. We left Manila at around 10:30 a.m. It was a 2-hour land trip and by the time we reached Hotel Kimberly, it wa...

Last Glimpse of Palawan

Image
A few hours from now, I will be boarding my flight back home via PAL PR 246, via Cebu. I will be spending one night in Cebu then will head back to Bacolod the following day at around 9:30 a.m. I have a few hours left to go to Tiangue Tiangue where I can buy some of the cheapest pasalubongs for the family. I was specifically told that I should bring home kasoy, a native delicacy here in Palawan. They do almost anything with these seeds: bake, roast, everything. It is quite expensive though. A doctor friend of mine told me that he was able to ask around and was told that 1/4 kilo of kasoy can cost you 100 pesos. It is that expensive. So, maybe I can buy some packs of it (I'm not really a nut-eater) and then a few souvenir items. I actually bought some while at Iwahig Prison Camp, a bunch of wooden key chains made by the prisoners themselves. While at Crocodile farm yesterday, I wanted to buy this crocodile stuff toy but it was kind of expensive. I was trying to spread my remaining mo...

Rainy Last Day In Puerto Princesa

Image
It is a rainy Puerto Princesa on my last day here in Palawan. The morning lectures went on smoothly, and despite the scheduled tours, the lecture hall was still packed with people. It was more of a slow morning however, considering that most people were tired from yesterday's underground trek, and it is the last day for all the updates and lectures. After lunch, Doc Maricel (Cauayan), Doc Emman (Inapoy) and I decided to go on a city tour. We went to Iwahig, Crocodile Farm, Butterfly Garden, Mitra Ranch and Baker's Hill. I was able to take pictures but my camera's batteries have been drained so I could not as of the moment post the pics. But I will do post them as early as tomorrow, if not on weekends when I arrive in Bacolod, home sweet home. It was a fun tour of the city and I get to visit the biggest penal colony in the country: Iwahig. I was able to also come close to freshwater crocodiles at the crocodile farm. We did drop by the butterfly garden but we decided not to e...
