Health Promotion Project

Part of the requirements of my medical students is to prepare a health promotion package for a particular health program. They are to make a poster, a brochure, a training manual and a 2-minute TV ad promoting their chosen health programs. There are four health programs to promote: Maternal and Child Health, Anti-Dengue Drive, Immunization and Tuberculosis. Here are the four 2-minute TV ads of the groups: Tuberculosis Maternal and Child Health Immunization Anti-Dengue Drive Help me decide which TV ad is effective in promoting their respective health program. Vote for your favorite TV ad here. Poll will be closed on August 10, 2012. While you're at it, you can also view other video-projects made by past medical students in my class in this link . Together with the TV ads are the posters the students made themselves. You can now vote for your favorite Health Promotion poster here. Like it? Share it. Get the Share on Facebook widget and man...

Museo Del Vino De Mijas

Image
I have visited many museums but perhaps this is one museum that I have quite enjoyed visiting. It is the Wine Museum in Mijas, Spain. Part of the tour of Mijas in Malaga was a quick visit in the Museo del Vino. Located just in the middle of the historic town of Mijas, the museum offers a journey through the history and the culture of the wine of the distinctive province of Malaga. Well, I wasn't there really to learn the culture and history more than to taste the variety of Spanish wines.      A professional oenologist demonstrated to us how wine is tested and then without any further delay poured various wines to taste. The wine list includes cavas, noble wines, table wines, reds and roses. Inside the small museum is a place where guests can order gourmet food and their choice of wine and dine.      I later found out that the museum is open for wine tasting events and other cultural events a group would sponsor. I would...

Olympics 2012: London Here We Go

Image
In a few hours from now, the Summer Olympics of 2012 will begin in London. Everyone will be watching this greatest sport event. Of course, everyone is anticipating the opening ceremonies in London which have been kept from the prying eyes and ears of the media. What we know so far is that the title of the show will be "Isle of Wonder" and Hollywood directors Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldrey are the ones in charge of this spectacle. What I personally look forward to is the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. In anticipation of this momentous occasion, here is a look back of how the Olympic Cauldron has been lit in the past opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics. And of course, my favorite ever... For Olympic theme songs, here are some of my favorites as well and of course the ever classic Whitney Houston anthem Godspeed Olympians. Faster. Stronger. Higher. Like it? Share it. Backpacking in Zamboanga Day One

Image
Part of my work is to visit far-flung areas in the country and help them address the perennial problem of maternal and infant deaths. As of the latest stats, the maternal mortality ratio of the country is 221 per 100,000 live births. So, last Friday, just as I was about to leave the office for a fun weekend, I was told to go to Zamboanga Peninsula to visit two far-flung municipalities: Gutalac and Siayan. This is not my first time to visit Zamboanga but it will be my first time to commute around the peninsula. Gutalac and Siayan are in Zamboanga del Norte. And because it was at the spur of the moment, I would be travelling without cash-advanced from the office. This sounded like an adventure. Together with another fellow associate, we landed in Zamboanga City airport early morning of Monday, had breakfast and proceeded to the Zamboanga City Bus Terminal in Guiwan. There are buses that would bring us to Dipolog City. To get to Gutalac which was our first stop we would be dropping off ...

Visiting The Vasa

Image
When I decided to do a whirlwind trip to Stockholm (Sweden), it was imperative that I shouldn't leave the city without visiting the famous Vasa. The Vasa is a Swedish military ship that sank after sailing less than 2 kilometers into its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. In the 1950's, it was salvaged and was housed in a temporary museum called Wasavarvet until 1987 and then moved to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm where it is presently located. According to literature, "Vasa was built top-heavy and had insufficient ballast. Despite an obvious lack of stability in port, it was allowed to set sail and foundered only a few minutes after it first encountered a wind stronger than a breeze. The impulsive move to set sail was the result of a combination of factors: Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus, who was leading the army on the continent on the date of its maiden voyage, was impatient to see it join the Baltic fleet in the Thirty Years' War; at the same time, the king's su...

Swimming With Dolphins In Chankanaab

Image
One of the many activities while I was in Cozumel, Mexico was visiting the Chankanaab National Park. The park is considered a conservation area for fauna and flora after being decreed a national park in the year 1980. It is located south of Cozumel just along the coast line. You can either take a cab or rent a car. Upon entering the Park, you get to choose which activity would you want to do. I chose the Dolphin Royal Swim package. The Dolphin Royal Swim entitles you to swim with not just one but two dolphins! It includes the famous foot push, where two dolphins will raise you up the water surface by pushing you from the bottom of your feet. It also includes the dorsal tow, a ride along the Caribbean Sea while you hold on to the dorsal fins. In addition, you will also receive a kiss, a hug, a handshake and you will be able to enjoy some free time with them in the water. It was my first time to be with a dolphin and I was very excited. Together with a group of tourists we went insi...

Suomenlinna

Image
When I visited Helsinki, I had the great opportunity to visit a sea fortress called Suomenlinna. Suomenlinna is a maritime fortress located off the coast of Helsinki. It is also a garrison town and a base for archipelago navy. The construction of the fortress began in 1748. In 1991, the fortress was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a unique monument of military architecture. There is a ferry in Kauppatori that would take visitors to the island. You won't miss the port since it is also where the Helsinki seat of government is located and an area where tourists can buy souvenirs and even fresh sea foods and other fruits. The ferry departs from the eastern side of Kauppatori, opposite the President’s Castle. At Suomenlinna the ferry departs from the main pier on Iso Mustasaari island. The ferry is part of the city transport network and all HSL tickets are accepted. You need to buy your ferry ticket before boarding. Tickets can be bought from ticket machines or the Ma...
