Day of Deceit: "Be Gentle as Doves, But Be Prudent As Serpents"

Why do I commemorate a Day of Deceit? This is to remind me of the limitations and weaknesses of Man. This is to remind me that while I must continue to trust people, I must be ready to take the consequences of the betrayal of my trust. One cannot trust if he is not ready to face the reverberations of betrayal. The origins of my Day of Deceit started in November 3, 2009, when I wrote what happened that early morning of that fateful day. The following post were originally taken from my private facebook account" "This morning, I decided to stay in Bacolod in order to process my supposed appointment papers as Municipal Health Officer. The municipal mayor is currently in Bacolod undergoing physiotherapy after recuperating from a stroke. I was planning to take a leave and to go to the Mayor's house to have him sign my papers. So I called up the Main Health Center (after sending text messages to my nurse-II) to tell them that I will be taking the first trip tomorrow (4 a.m.)...

Teaching Community Medicine in the 21st Century

I have just attended the general assembly and annual convention of the Philippine Academic Society of Community Medicine in Manila yesterday, a move which actually hoped to revive the long-hibernated academic society of professors teaching community medicine. With its theme: Community Medicine - Past, Present and Future Directions, the half-day convention highlighted updates on the status of Community medicine education in the country and highlighted best practices of other med schools with regards to faculty development. I am thankful that my University, the University of Saint La Salle, tapped me to represent the school, being the lone delegate from Negros. In the many talks, I was actually interested on the talk given by Dr. Elizabeth Paterno. Her talk was on Global Trends in Community Medicine. Among the many highlights in her talk were: presently, the way community medicine is being taught in our schools is still anchored on the Flexnerian type of teaching (scientific-based), far f...

Pilipinas Got Talent Season 3

This year's PGT Finals have better contestants than last season's. I was not even convinced of last season's winner. Come on, we have better talents than singing in falsetto. It wasn't even good singing. Well, anyway, this season's finals was definitely better. Here's my top three: El Gamma Penumbra from Batangas Synergy from San Carlos City Muriel from Lapu-Lapu City Results Show is tonight Oct. 23, 2011 Like it? Share it. Old Manila

While doing some research and reading about Philippine History, I came across a handful of youtube videos featuring Manila and the Philippines during the earlier moments of our history. It is really a curious sight to see the 'young face' of our country and capital. So much has changed since then. Manila was dubbed as the Queen City of the Pacific during the American Era. The Philippines as a whole was referred to as the Pearl of the Orient. Looking at the way things are now, one wonders, "What happened?" Like it? Share it. "Hollywood" Signs a la Pinoy

Image
News about Gov. Vilma Santos putting up a huge "BATANGAS" sign at Mt. Taal reminiscent of the familiar Hollywood sign in the US triggered a lot of comments and feedback in the blogosphere. Pinoy as we are, a lot of artistic alternatives to this proposal also propped up in the net. The picture shown here is the supposed view of Mt. Taal once the "Batangas" sign would be erected. After this picture came out, more funny pictures started circulating in the web. Here are just some funny examples: I'm not sure if they can make this sign in Mt. Mayon very sustainable though, due to its frequent volcanic activity. I think it's time the Chinese must know how to read the signs. And since we are labeling our islands, let's make sure we still have 7,107 of them still accounted for. Or why not use it for commercial or advertising purposes? Remember these guys from DPWH? Just calling a spade a spade. I think this is Governor Vilma's favorite. Let...

The Landing At Leyte: A Promise Made

Image
October 20 is always a historic day for Filipinos. It marks the day when the American Forces, under the command of General Douglas McArthur, landed in Philippine soil years after they were expelled by the Japanese during World War II. When General McArthur retreated to Australia during the invasion of the Japanese in 1942, he told the Australian politicians and diplomats the famous line, "I shall return (to the Philippines)". Almost 3 years later, the feisty General indeed returned to the Philippines, keeping his promise to the Filipino people. But it wasn't an easy comeback. Days before the landing in Palo, Leyte, the biggest Naval Battle in human history occurred. The Battle of Leyte Gulf included four major naval battles: the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, the Battle of Surigao Strait, the Battle off Cape Engaño and the Battle off Samar. The Battle of Leyte Gulf is also notable as the first battle in which Japanese aircraft carried out organized kamikaze attacks.[3][4...
