SONA: Must Highlight Health

Image
I have heard a lot of SONA's in the past and yet, as far as I can remember, I have yet to hear a President talk about his or her comprehensive strategy towards the uplifting of our health situation as a nation. To put it bluntly, I have not encountered any Filipino president who has his or her heart set on prioritizing health. I am bitching about it not only because I am a doctor but because it is a personal conviction that the success of a country lies on how optimal its state of health as a nation. The Philippines is literally a sick nation. While there have been some improvements done regarding maternal deaths and infant deaths for example, a lot can still be done. I can't help but have this feeling that there is something that is keeping us from moving forward as a nation when it comes to Health care. As far as I see it, there are basically 3 problem areas that are keeping us from improving our health care system. Problem No. 1: Human resources. The Philippines is the No. 1...

Cinemanatomy 2011

In 2009, the first Physio-mercial competition among my students (then, in the Human Physiology course) was launched. The objective was to "sell" a fictitious brand/product using physiological concepts. The winner of that first competition was MemoryUp In 2010, the same concept was introduced this time to my Anatomy students and thus the Cinemanatomy was born. The winner of that contest was the group on the Urinary Bladder For this year 2011, there will be four entries. One entry will be a Soap/TV Drama format. My Favorite Places

Image
I have this conviction that to travel is to learn twice. Thus, with my travelings both in and out of the country, I have learned so much about the places and people and their culture, especially their food, and these learnings have definitely enriched me personally. Among the many places I have been to, here's my list of my favorite places both within and outside of the Philippines. Boracay Island - in Aklan, Visayas, Philippines, is still the best beach for me. While it may be a crowded beach, the white sands of Boracay are unlike any other. I have been to Boracay many times, either with friends or family. Among the best places to stay is at La Carmela de Boracay. There are other cheap accommodations as well and most of them are a few meters from the beach. Off-peak season starts at June which is usually the rainy season in the Philippines. If you are coming from Manila or Cebu, there are available flights to Caticlan which is in mainland Panay. If you are coming from other provi...

Reflections On The Streets Of Venice

Image
Exactly 7 days from now, I will be heading back to the Philippines to begin yet another new chapter in my life. The next 7 days will be my last aboard the Voyager of the Seas working as their first ever Medi-Spa Physician. Six months ago I was almost hesitant to come onboard and work abroad, far from the comforts of home and family. The first 2 weeks were a struggle and I was on the brink of giving up. But then I decided to let go of all negative thoughts and focused on the things that were more positive. It is true what they say, "You can't direct the wind, but yo can adjust your sail." So I gave up on the thoughts that tell me that "I can't" and started declaring the two most powerful words in the entire Universe, "I can". As I started this new attitude, I looked back and recalled the times I spoke the words, "I can't". Perhaps it is no longer important how many times I said and thought those words. After all, my life isn't th...

Crossing The Atlantic And Publishing Calypso

Image
I am currently crossing the Atlantic Ocean onboard the Voyager of the Seas and while the first 7 days of the crossing was pretty much smooth, yesterday was very rocky. It was also quite a hectic day for me. I had two classes (1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon) and had some consultations and treatments in the afternoon. I left the office already past 8pm. I had to take some Meclizine tablets before dinner because I wasn't really feeling good. I did manage to hold up during the entire class in the afternoon and during the treatments that I did as well. So far, the transatlantic crossing has been better than expected. I have been busy almost everyday and so far everything is smooth sailing. By Tuesday, we will already be in the Azores, which is a group of Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic. Two more Sea Days after that, we will already be in Malaga, Spain. By Sunday, I will be in Barcelona. Perhaps, if there is one thing that was very significant during my Transatlant...
