Lucky Kids

Today is the start of "better" fortunes for 3 Candonian kids: Emborniza (Cabia-an), Garcia (Gatuslao) and Amar (Caningay). These three are recipients of the ABS-CBN Bantay Bata Foundation. Emborniza has a facial defect, Garcia has a suspected clavicular fracture or spinal column fracture, Amar has imperforate anus with colostomy. These three are indigents and have been identified during the Bantay Bata Medical Mission in Candoni. All three kids are my regular patients, although Garcia was referred to me by a Barangay Councilor of Gatuslao during one of my barangay visits. During that particular visit, I was led to Garcia's house, a small bahay kubo in the middle of a remote sugarcane field. He had an older sister with him, cooking the family's lunch. His older brother was at that time working in the fields. They no longer have parents. Their very old grandfather was taking care of them. This morning, we brought them to Bacolod City to get their referrals from Bantay B...

Buntis Baby Bag Update No. 4: More Bags!

Image
My wife and I have just finished repacking the new set of Green and White Bags for the Buntis Baby Bag Project for the Mothers and Babies of Candoni. I have yet to finish giving away the first batch of Green and White Bags last week. Any excess of these donated bags will be given out even beyond December until all supplies are exhausted. The second batch of donates came from the rest of the BS Biology students of the University of Saint La Salle through their club THE PREMED SOCIETY. In fact, during my visit to the school this week, I was happy to see an advertisement posted by the club in one of the bulletin boards in the campus informing the student community about the Buntis Baby Bag Project. I am pretty sure that some of these donations therefore did not come from just the Premed Society but other concerned and generous students and teachers of USLS. The second batch of donations was mostly noodles, canned goods, baby clothes and...toys! My kids thought that the toys were for them....

ABS-CBN live!

Image
Watch live video from theBlockerPH LIVE on Justin.tv I am currently watching Harapan: The Presidential Debates. So far, Sec. Gibo Teodoro is the only one answering with some sense. The rest are obviously focusing on the dramatics. Erap's a big joke. The Kapatiran candidate with Bro. Eddie Villanueva appear so self-righteous, almost with a Messianic complex. Noynoy Aquino...well obviously has charisma but then I feel the charisma only appeals to the middle class and elite.

Sidestory: Helping the Birth Attendants

Image
Last July 2009, I happened to come across the Asian Development Bank (Southeast Asia Department) and read about their Enhancing Midwives' Entrepreneurial and Financial Literacy ( Credit for Better Health Care Project ). I was not sure how this support system would work but I emailed the project coordinator nonetheless and inquired about the project. As far as I understood it, it is about helping midwives on how to start their livelihood. Since it is a Credit for Better Health care project, I was thinking that maybe some loan for capital investment is involved here. I have always wanted to put up a cooperative for my midwives or even my barangay health workers or traditional birth attendants (hilots), especially the latter. My email was something like this: "Vincent De Wit ADB Officer I am Dr. Bien Eli Nillos, Municipal Health Officer of the Municipality of Candoni, Negros Occidental, employed by the National Government under the Department of Health's Doctors to the Barrio...

Green and White Bags For Moms and Babies

Image
For this week (week 1), we were only able to collect enough items to make 13 green bags and 8 white bags. Which means, we will be giving a maximum of 13 bags for mothers who will be delivering their babies in our main health center for this week. If there will be less than 13 mothers who will deliver at the health center, the remaining bags will be carried over for the next week (week 2). The white bags will be given to mothers who will be bringing their kids to the Barangay health station for the Measles vaccine (to become fully immunized children). And since I only have 8 white bags, I will be choosing Barangay Agboy as my recipient barangay for this week. Barangay Agboy is one of my farthest Barangays and the population is quite small. However, the FIC rate is quite low compared to other barangays. So, this Wednesday (EPI Day), we will be going to Agboy to distribute 8 white bags to 8 kids who will be Fully Immunized Children. After dinner, my wife and I started packing the Green an...
