So Far...

So far, a month has passed and I can fairly say that my rotation as a surgical PGI is swell. The following have been the many operations I have attended to, most of which I was First Assist: 1. Appendectomy 2. Cholecystectomy 3. Exploratory laparotomy 4. Adhesiolysis 5. Common Bile Duct Exploration 6. Choledochoduodenostomy 7. Palatoplasty 8. Rhinoplasty 9. Herniorrhaphy 10. Open reduction and internal fixation of fractures 11. Debridement of diabetic foot 12. Craniectomy 13. Modified Radical Mastectomy 14. Excisions of cysts I am a "benign" PGI, with an average number of admissions of 4. The longest Operation I attended to was a Craniectomy and an ORIF of right mandibular fracture (closed, comminuted), done on a single patient. Oepration lasted 6 1/2 hours. The patient was a victim of a hacking incident, sustaining most of his injuries on the face and skull. The second longest operation was a CBDE with choledochodoudenostomy done on a patient who already had her gallbladder ...

Sex Scandals

There is that palpable tension between the two sexes, male and female. Somehow, this tension has been brought about by the increasing awareness and advocacy for gender equality between the two sexes. The women claims they can do anything that men can do and that there are somethings which women can do that men can't. The battle for gender supremacy is on. You tally the score. What women can do but men can't. 1. Get pregnant 2. Bleed every month and still live to tell about it 3. Kiss fellow women on the lips without malice 4. Augment their breasts 5. Ask directions when lost. (admit it, guys. We can't seem to find ourselves asking for directions when lost) 6. Talk for hours without stopping 7. Wear thongs (although this can be contended by other "men") 8. Lactate (do you know of other things women can do but men can't? Add them up) What men can do but women can't 1. urinate together in one urinal 2. get a hard-on (hmmmm....looks like the men are falling be...

Now come the pictures of our graduation day courtesy of our friends in G-tech. Just opened a link to my official photoalbum. Now my only qualms with Myphotoalbum is that sometimes it takes too slow to upload a pic. Anyway, more links to more albums coming in a few sec. The Graduate Bayen Trademark

Doctor, Doctor I am Sick, Call the Nurse Very Quick!

It can't be stopped this migration of professional doctors outside of the Philippines. Every school year, many doctors are enrolling themselves in nursing schools and at least a hundred of these nurses a day leave the country to work elsewhere. The main reason really is that there is good pay and fair compensation. The demand for health workers in Europe and the U.S. is high and the promise of a more secure future for the family is so tempting that if it were a sin, Hell would be overcrowded. This predicament has led to lesser doctors to attend to the ever growing population of patients. Instead of spending more time in their clinics doing consultations, doctors would spend more time studying for their nursing course. This results to lesser time spent in the hospitals thus lesser income for the hospitals and therefore the gradual shut down of these hospitals. The medical profession has lost its luster. Every year, the number of doctors applying for residency are declining. In contr...

New Policy

I have been working my ass off for more than a year now. A year free of charge with more than a hundred 24 hour duty-days in the hospital. A year of hard labor and mental torture. A year of pressures and tensions and stresses. I haven't received anything for it. No fulfillment. No reward. Yes, perhaps one can argue that the reward comes in the gratitude of the patients I have met. Perhaps one can argue that having received the outstanding junior intern for medicine is one of those rewards. But forgive me if I become cynical at the moment. There are days that I feel regret. There are brief moments in the middle of work that I fancied having a different life. Worse, there have been days I wish to have a different life. For all this time I have not given much time for myself, haven't pampered myself. I have abused myself, gave no regard for self and have displaced my personal ambitions for a road which I now feel has only been imposed upon me by circumstances, most of which I fear...

When The Cat is Away.....

Image
It was supposed to be a case presentation regarding appendicitis and appendectomy but an hour and a half later, we 14 PGIs realized no consultant was coming so we spent the moment at the Board Room photocopying our I.D.s (for our application for a savings account) and taking pictures of ourselves. Using MacMac's state of the art cellphone, all 14 of us posed before the camera a la telenovela primer. Boys Line (L-R): Pax, Melvin, Gerard, Bayen, Mark A., Mark J.,Andy. Girls Line (L-R): Joanne, Gabby, Leah, Bel, Tin, Con and Ken. Bayen Trademark Same Serious Moment, with the girls on the seats this time. Bayen Trademark So after all the formalities, it's to play!
