Visita Iglesia: Tracing The Pilgrim's Steps in Europe Part One

While traveling in Europe, I made sure to visit the churches and Cathedrals in every town or city that I visited. With the World Youth Day happening now in Madrid, Spain, I can't help but reminisce my own "pilgrimage" to these holy sites and historic churches in Europe.

1. Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal: The Archipelago of the Azores is composed of nine volcanic islands situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, and is located about 1,500 km (930 mi) west from Lisbon and about 3,900 km (2,400 mi) east from the east coast of North America. Predominantly Catholic, it boasts of many Cathedrals and churches.

2. Cartagena, Spain: I adored this beautiful city in Spain. It has a nice Cathedral right in the middle of the city. Among the highlights of my visit to this place was a tour inside an ancient Roman amphitheater.

3. Mijas, spain: this very picturesque town with white-washed houses on the slopes of this beautiful mountain is an ideal place for a tour of historic Spain and even for lovers who wish to wed. On top of Mijas is a beautiful chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rock. It is literally a chapel carved inside a cave.

4. Toulon, France: a very quiet French town in the Southern coast of France. I happened to tour the town alone, walking through its almost labyrinthine streets. I happened to encounter this nice Cathedral right on top of the sloping hills of Toulon.

5. Barcelona, Spain: you can't help but visit the Church of the Sagrada Familia if you are in Barcelona, Spain. The architecture is really unique and the Cathedral is really very huge. Until now, the construction of the Cathedral is ongoing. During my visit to the Sagrada Familiar, there were scaffoldings slightly obstructing the famous facade of the Church.

6. Pisa, Italy: the real intention was to see the Leaning Tower, which is actually the free-standing belltower of the Cathedral of Pisa. It is definitely a sight to behold. The Piazza del Duomo was huge and was literally filled up with tourists.

Part Two of this blog will feature my visit to St. Peter's Basilica, the Duomo in Messina and other churches visited, including some Orthodox Churches in Scandinavia.
